This is being driven by the Unions in an effort to make a comeback in membership. Fast food jobs are primarily entry level jobs for teens to learn how to work. Those that have moved up to management are paid a good wage.

The unions want an increase in the minimum wage so they can take advantage of the automatic wage increases built into their contracts.

All a higher minimum wage accomplishes is to inflate the money and make it necessary to raise prices to cover the increase costs of doing business. It will also remove the entry level jobs that teens need to gain work experience.
