Dan Rather Tells Chris Matthews … “Obama Couldn’t Sell Watermelons”

Take a good look and listen to what Dan Rather said about the Obamamessiah on the syndicated Chris Matthews Show via News Busters. The former CBS News anchor may have really stepped in it this time. No word on whether Chris Matthews got a tingly feeling up his leg when he heard Rather make the watermelon comment.

Rather said what? No way he really said this …

DAN RATHER: Part of the undertow in the coming election is going to be President Obama’s leadership. And the Republicans will make a case and a lot of independents will buy this argument. “Listen he just hasn’t been, look at the health care bill. It was his number one priority. It took him forever to get it through and he had to compromise it to death.” And a version of, “Listen he’s a nice person, he’s very articulate” this is what’s been used against him, “but he couldn’t sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.”

Hot Air asks the question we all are, could you even imagine what would have happened had a conservative said the exact same thing. Really, imagine if Rush, Beck or Hannity said such words.

I am not sure about watermelons, but we know Obama can’t sell health care.

I think there is less here than meets the eye. I think Rather would really like to see a liberal President succeed, but this one is wrecking the party. The watermelon comment is a regional thing. It is a common sight on the highways of south central Texas to see a roadside vendor selling watermelons out of the back of a pickup truck. I doubt Hannity would make such a goof, but if he did there would be outrage!

#1, sorry in this day and age you do not get to make such a comment regarding an African-American no matter where you are from and certainly not on TV.

      Just more liberal double standard.

obammma hates the insurance companiers so much
that his plan gives them 336 billion dollars
. now is he a liar, a cheat, and a thief ? hell
yes. and the uneducated democrats still don’t
      get it.

Waiting patiently to see who comes down on the head of Dan Rather first.

Watermelons are sold on every corner here in NC…and I agree…BO couldn’t even sell them.

Liberals ? Did you hear that remark?

    5. david r on March 9th, 2010 8:49 am

What is Rather now, 80? And African Americans need to lighten up on the watermelon thing. Does anyone not love watermelons? And fried chicken? If we can’t come together on these simple things what can we agree on? I agree about the double standard, though. If Palin had said it there would be riots (and probably looting)in NYC.

here’s a good one. $71,623.00 in stimulus funds to North carolina lab to watch monkeys use cocaine until they die. this study is as old as dinosaur $hit. didn’t the dumbocrats see this commercial on tv 20 years ago ?
while American citizens are out of work and struggling, monkeys get high on coke on our time
      and our dime.

I don’t care about Dan Rather’s political label, to equate the selling of heathcare with selling of watermelons is one of the most racially statements one could make.

Real Watermelons are out of season and so is this comment. Healthcare as a native need in America doesn’t have to be sold. As an entity with the dollar struggle it is a hot issue.

I contend Dan Rather and most Americans were not and still are not prepared for this President. Judging one by the content of their character may be the standard Dr. King established for his children’s acceptance in society, but for the Head of State, this standard does not hold water.

There is no standard for an African American President. This president is the first and while he is trying to be regarded, judged and compared to the 43 before him will take more time than Jan 20, 2008 to the present. The Dan Rather statement is another in a series of assessments.

Ok,maybe the watermelon quote had a tinge of sterotyping. But i bet Obama couldn,t sell fish at a Saturday nite fish fry.

Rather said “but he couldn’t sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.”

He is obviously referring to a road side vendor as in the easiest way to make a couple bucks by selling fruit and vegetables out of the back of a pickup truck. You see people of all races doing it all summer long because you can’t go wrong. Have you ever seen people not stopped at one? Very rarly.

But if any conservative said it in the same context..watchout!

    11. super dave on March 9th, 2010 1:52 pm

i wonder if that sent a tingle up chrissie’s
leg ? i bet he went home and ate watermelon
      till he popped.

    12. dawg1948 on March 9th, 2010 4:27 pm

If he said “That Boy couldn’t sell watermelons”, I would be concerned, otherwise shut the Hell Up!

    13. dennisintn on March 9th, 2010 11:41 pm

roflmao, i’ll bet wallace fell off his chair trying to choke that comment down. wish i had seen his response.
      dennisintn

and dan rather was absolutely correct.

    14. Scott on March 10th, 2010 7:04 am

Rather is a liberal puke who was EXPOSED as a journalist with an agenda who went so far as to make up a document with lies about Bush.

He’s a bitter old man with ZERO relevance anymore; which is why he made this comment. He’s not stupid and he knew this statement would draw attention to him….that’s all it is…

I don’t share the same views as someone, so I am going to resort to the mature thing, calling them names. Stay classy SUPER DAVE. When does your girl Misty get out of prison. Bet you miss her.

jack, since i have a job, (unlike you) i have a customer to deal with.

    19. super dave on March 10th, 2010 4:21 pm

hey jerk, i mean jack, i bet you got a bigger tingle from that than your boy chris got from your daddy obama.

Dear SM on #2…yes…but if Al Sharpton said it..would be ok maybe? ;>) Does really depend on who you are. Obama made the lipstick on a pig remark and if not for conservative news, it would have been greatly ignored (hence the double standard you mentioned). Personally, it think it was a funny comment cuz doubtfully he could sell one…even if seedless.

    21. Jack Hammer on March 11th, 2010 10:44 am

Seriously SUPER DAVE….mama jokes? Even I thought you were better than that. But oh well, do they still count McDonalds as a job?
