Rev Wright is no doubt a racist sob, but what he was so pathetically commenting on is a somewhat more understandable gripe. We don’t hear much about most cases of missing young women, still there is a definite inbalance in the media on the black/white split. I do not believe at all that it is willful racism, but we are of course a predominantly white country and humans sympathise best with what they are familiar with. While that may be human nature, it’s also something we should be aware of in ourselves and fight hard against- the empathy disconnect. We feel more for some than others. But a victim is a victim. The tragedy of each– and the tragedy for those who loved them– these are certain and should be breathed in fully.

Proof of this is in the media. If we felt the same for all of them, the media, responding to demand, would give equal coverage. Who’s fault is this? In different ways it’s everybody’s fault- including Rev. Wright who would rather make a complicated issue simple, even if that means placing a hood over truth.
