Justice Interrupted: Lori Drew MySpace Hoax that Caused Megan Meier’s Suicide Tentatively Thrown Out by Judge

Lori Drew, there may be no justice provided on earth; however, there is a special spot in hell reserved for you for your actions against a 13 year old defenseless little girl.

Megan Meier

Will there really be no justice for deceased 13 year old Megan Meier and her family? A federal judge on Thursday tentatively threw out the MySpace computer fraud conviction against Lori Drew. How is it possible that the Missouri mom, Lori Drew, walks away from the cyberbullying and suicide of Megan Meier with no conviction, but with blood on her hands?

Lori Drew, the keyboard coward who was complicit in typing “Megan Meier is a slut” and “Megan Meier is fat ” and “The world would be a better place without you.”

Lori Drew’s intent was to emotionally harass a minor. How did Lori Drew’s actions not constitute, stalking, harassing and endangering the welfare of a minor?

Watch this VIDEO from GMA and decide for yourself whether Lori Drew should be doing jail time. Want to be outraged all over again?

Lori Drew was complicit, along with her own teenage daughter and a business assistant, Ashley Grills, in creating a fake MySpace profile using the identity of 16 year old Josh Evans  (VIDEO) to  flirt with Meier, befriend her, and then rudely abandon her. The end result was that Megan Meier took her life by hanging herself.

Tina, Megan Meier’s mom

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006, allegedly after receiving a dozen or more cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

How is it possible that Lori Drew cannot be charged? How can someone cyberbully another to then point that they commit suicide and not be held responsible? How can Lori Drew have inappropriate conversations with a minor? This is simply criminal. After all, Drew et all pretended to be a 16 year old boy and were having an inappropriate conversations with a 13 year old minor girl. How is this different than is it were a male sex predator pretending to be a 16 year old boy and emailing a 13 year old? In both cases their intent would have been to endanger the welfare of a minor.

She set up a MySpace profile for the imaginary boy, complete with a picture of a random handsome youth, and then contacted Megan. “Josh Evans” chatted with Megan for about six weeks. He called her “sexi” and offered to take her out on a date.

Megan’s parents said their daughter, who struggled with her weight, was thrilled by the attention from a “hot” boy.

But then “Josh” turned on Megan. Among the last things Megan saw online on Oct. 16, 2006, were postings saying “Megan Meier is a slut” and “Megan Meier is fat.”

Her parents said the last message from “Josh” said, “Everybody hates you. … The world would be a better place without you.”

Lori Drew’s reaction to the events was that she should never have gone to trial in the first place for her role in a MySpace hoax directed at a 13 year old Megan Meier.

Drew showed no reaction to the decision in the courtroom. In a statement read on NBC’s “Today” show Friday, said she agreed with it and felt she never should have been prosecuted.

“In my view, it was proper that this case was dismissed, primarily because I simply did not do what the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles accused me of doing,” Drew said.

One would tend to think that there are different severities of violating a term of service. It would be one thing to knowingly create a fake identity. It is quite a different thing to do so to perpetrate a crime on another individual.

This story burns me to my core! Justice must be served for this poor girl and her family. Lori Drew, Ashley Grills and her daughter should be made to suffer for the rest of their lives!

By the way.. Lori and Ashley… calling this beautiful girl fat?? They’re probably pushing one tone between the two of ‘em!

What can we do to help the Meier family in their fight for justice? These people cannot get away with this!!!!

    2. NY'r on July 3rd, 2009 3:12 pm

I may be stoned for this comment however I agree with the judge. I do feel this woman needs to pay however prison is a little too harsh. I do not believe she caused this little girls death as i feel she had some emotional issues prior due to other reasons. Her parents should’ve monitored her pc use, she was living through her online friends and it should’ve never happened. The woman should get some community service and therapy….I do believe she acted in a very inmature way however prison as punishment is not the answer. Rapists dont even serve the time they wanted to give her. Education is the key..

    3. Sweetie_Pi on July 3rd, 2009 3:36 pm

Isn’t it funny, how this woman with a daughter – screwed a little girl to death with her vicious words, not unlike Melissa Lawless Huckaby who (allegedly) used a screwdriver to rape Sandra Cantu and murder her in Tracy, CA.

Yes, MELISSA HUCKABY and LORI DREW – two of a kind – one posing as a man to screw a little girl out of her mind, one raping as a man… same difference. LORI DREW and MELISSA HUCKABY – same difference.

LORI DREW have some shame and swallow some razor blades.

Law Enforcement, don’t make the same mistake twice, there is as much evil in women as men.

    4. Sweetie_Pi on July 3rd, 2009 3:39 pm

PS Perhaps you should refer to LORI DREW as Missouri’s MELISSA HUCKABY. People will then understand what she is.

    5. Mike on July 3rd, 2009 4:45 pm

I have to disagree with you. Drew knew of Megan’s depression but still decided to target her. To me thats harassment and stalking….both illegal.

I think the problem lies with the fact that some states current laws have yet to catch up with the information age. Megan is now the cyberbulling poster child and Drew is the #1 villain.

    6. USS Yorktown on July 3rd, 2009 5:10 pm

Lori Drew has to be the most hated person besides Osama bin Laden/September 11 Terrorists. She reminds me of Fred Phelps in appearance and mentality. Phelps is the leader of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church that hates gays and America.

Both are psychopaths of the lowest denominator and consumed with self hate. Phelps is more of a megalomaniac, while Drew is a resentful woman.

Here is something of interest. It is what appears to be Lori Drew’s family tree.

It does not clearly identify her parents. No mention of her father.

    7. Robyn on July 3rd, 2009 5:26 pm

As a mom of two young teenage boys I know how much it hurts to watch them hurt but to do what “My Space mom” Lori Drew did was just going too far. What is wrong with this world we live in? Where is social and moral responsibility? When will people start being held responsible for their actions? If she had done the things she did to Megan in “real life”, not hiding behind a computer screen she would have at the very least been charged with criminal harassment or something if not more serious. http://myselkie.com/blog/index.php/2009/07/03/when-protective-parenting-goes-too-far/

    8. Michelle Smith on July 3rd, 2009 5:44 pm

I believe Megan’s parents were monitoring what she was doing on myspace. Megan’s mother said that she made her get off the computer when she saw what was going on. She obviously didn’t think that her daughter was going to commit suicide because of it. The problem I have with this is that a grown woman thinks that it is okay to make up a fake account to harass & bully someone over the internet all because her daughter and Megan did not get along. This kind of thing happens more than people may realize. Teenagers have so much drama all the time and it’s important as parents to talk to our children and act like adults. It’s not our job as parents to help our children perpetrate crimes against others but instead teach them how to be responsible and caring individuals. Kids don’t always get along and they will argue & fight but that’s what teenagers do and a grown woman had no business joining in with her daughter and another girl in harassing this girl to the point that she took her own life.

What the hell is wrong with people.

As I see it they were jealous of Megan and in order to feel better about themselves they had to insult and demean another human being.

I feel sorry for Megan’s family for what they have been through and now to see this evil woman going unpunished for what she did is sickening. Where is the justice for Megan Meier?

    9. Scared Monkeys on July 3rd, 2009 8:11 pm

#2, you won’t be stoned, just disagreed with. I wonder if it were your child if you thought the sentence was too harsh? Hmm?

Lori Drew knew Megan had issues. She preyed on her issues.

Let alone the fact that she went after a minor with malice and forethought.

Lori can thank her lucky stars that Megan was not my daughter.

However, no where this woman goes will she be able to avoid the fact that John Q. Public knows what she did. Lori Drew has sex offender status.

    10. Solange82200 on July 3rd, 2009 9:30 pm

I agree, I would have hunted her down if this were my kid. What makes it so horrible is that she knew Megan suffered from depression, and if I’m not mistaken, she knew she had already had a suicide attempt? For a grown woman to do what she did, with that knowledge, I think that is when we need to take those factors into consideration, and realize that this is not the equivalent of someone just being mean to another person, or playing a prank.

    11. buster on July 3rd, 2009 11:32 pm

lori drew is a worthless piece of $hit who for a moment felt very satisfied hurting Megan, I am sure the worthless lori drew’s life is so lousy and she is so unhappy that she took pleasure hurting poor Megan. Because of this I think she should do jail time.

    12. bob on July 4th, 2009 1:54 am

The judge was right. Lori Drew committed no actual crime. The Missouri prosecutors tried to find one, but couldn’t. Morality and the law are two different things. Something can be both immoral and legal. There is no legal requirement that people be nice to each other. A person who chooses to go through life offending as many people as possible has a right to do so.

It was suicide, after all, and only Megan can considered to be responsible for it.
SM: Have to disagree with you. And I do wonder how you would comment if Megan was your daughter or related to you?

The fact of the matter is we have useless politicians more worried about getting re-elected than they are writing bills that protect children in and internet age. This was a form of stalking and harassment. How could it be not? Those are both crimes.

No one has the right to knowingly hurt another individual when that is their sole intent and to do in while perpetrating a fraud.

How would this case change if Lori Drew was a man?

After all, Drew was pretending to be a teenage boy and pretending to be interested in a 13 year old girl. Hmm.

    13. St Stephen on July 4th, 2009 6:18 am

I would concur with #9-SM’s analogy that Lori drew may be in fact and indeed a predator of sorts. This was an underage child which we are speaking of and as such she needed protection from being victimized by a predatory adult, and she most definitely was stalked.

      #2 NY’r

The fact that there are some ignorant justices ruling in the courts does not minimize the atrocity that this adult perpetrated on Megan Meier. To suggest that the punishment was too harsh because of sentences that other criminals receive sounds to me convoluted.

However with the type of thinking that you ascribe to, there may not be justice for Megan should the judge feel the same way as you do, and it appears that he does.

    14. R.L.Haley on July 4th, 2009 7:05 am

Lori Drew is a child of god,who had no life(thats clear) and now her life will be hell because of her own choices,if I was Megans mother I would have to be tied up , under heavy sedation, and watched 27/7 or I would make Loris life hell…oh just for the next 30 years,(thats just me)but if Megans mother can forgive this gross poor useless waste of bloated skin by the name of Lori Drew she can mabey find some peace in the future.I pray she will.

    15. Susan on July 4th, 2009 9:55 am

To all who agree with this pathetic excuse of a judge’s decision and dare to defend Lori (the pig) Drew’s actions, WHAT THE F*CK is wrong with you?!?!? You are all as SICK and demented as the PIG herself is!!

    17. USS Yorktown on July 4th, 2009 3:16 pm

How will history judge Lori Drew? Let say 10 to 30 years later? All I can say is she is an infamous figure and shares it with figures like Aileen Wuornos, Eric Harris/Dylan Klebold, Osama bin Laden, and Adolf Hitler.

What Lori Drew did was immature, but she didn’t kill Megan. Megan did.

Do you honestly think that Ms. Drew had the intention of Megan killing herself?

I don’t condone what Ms. Drew did, but she shouldn’t be sent to jail for another human’s decision to end their own life. Ecspecially since the child had to have been very disturbed/ had other things going on in her life to make her want to kill herself because no normal person, ecspecially a thirteen year old would kill themselves over someone they’ve never met.

And it has been said that it would be a whole different situation if it were a man who did this, and yes it would be. But she wasn’t a man. So there was nothing sexual about this, just immature and petty.

What Meagan did, she did to herself.
SM: Its actually beyond immature, it was wreckless. It is the equivalence of chasing someone into traffic and them getting hit and killed by a car. No, you did not kill them, but your actions were part and parcel responsible for the death.

You cannot know that some one is troubled and push them over the edge and not think that you are not partially responsible.

Had Drew never done this it is probably that Megan would still be with us.

    22. Rachel on July 4th, 2009 6:20 pm

No, if Ms. Drew had never done this, something else would have pushed Megan over the edge.

If she couldn’t take one internet “boyfriend” turning against her and had to kill herself, I’m sure she would not have been able to handle the next few years of her life.

And I’m not saying Ms. Drew wasn’t wrong for doing it, but she shouldn’t be put in jail for a fake myspace account and some mean words.

If a real boyfriend had broken up with her and said the same things and she killed herself, would he be put in jail?
      SM: I disagree.

You are dealing in hypothetical. I am dealing with the reality of what happened. You cannot discount the fact that this woman did push her over the edge.

You just admitted above in your comment that she did push her over the edge.

No, if Ms. Drew had never done this, something else would have pushed Megan over the edge.

You cannot find someone not guilty because something in the future would have killed them??? That makes no sense. That’s like saying she could have been hit by a car so the person that murdered them is innocent as they could have died anyhow.

      She should go to jail.

Cyberbullying must come to an end. This incident ended in death.

    23. Michelle Smith on July 4th, 2009 6:30 pm

#21 Do you have a teenage daughter? You may be surprised at what can send them over the edge.

    24. Michelle Smith on July 4th, 2009 6:36 pm

Harassment & stalking are a crime. How is it different being over the internet? It isn’t. We need better laws to protect the innocent from perpetrators over the internet. The laws have not caught up with technology and sadly it will take more deaths or brutality for something to be done about it. You guys remember the guy who committed suicide by taking pills via web cam? How about the girl in Florida who was beaten by a group of her peers over something posted on myspace.

    25. Scared Monkeys on July 4th, 2009 7:53 pm

I have been chatting with LA ADA Robin Sax regarding this judges decision and briefly she brings up the following:

It’s unbelievable to me that this judge would do this. What kind of a message is he sending? I doubt that if Lori Drew was Larry Drew (a man) he would do the same. The fact is if we don’t hold ADULTS accountable then how can we hold kids accountable.

But, this case is so disturbing especially in light of “sexting” type cases where we make young kids register as sex offenders (not the intent of the child porn) laws…where is the justice?

Robin makes a great point. We are arresting teenagers as sex offenders for “sexting” where there is no intent of child porn, yet we are allowing Lori Drew who’s intent was to a harass off scott free.

    26. USS Yorktown on July 4th, 2009 8:24 pm

Well said Susan. People who defend and side with Lori Drew with people who are sick in their brains. They see Drew as a leader and are in league with followers of the Westboro Baptist Church, Manson Family, or Al-Qaeda. They are also the kind of people who think Eric Harris/Dylan Klebold or Seung-Hui Cho were justified in attacking their school. Sick and worthless that they all are.

I do apologize in my previous posts if I offended anyone by making comparison of Lori Drew with other evil figures. I know what she did is wrong, but does not compare to terrorism or mass murder. There are many people suffering and grieving their losses.

    27. Rachel on July 5th, 2009 11:33 am

#21 is a teenage daughter. With depression.

And all I’m saying is that while Lori Drew did something very immature and irresponsible, how can you say that she did it with the intention to kill?

I am surprised that an adult would do something like this, because this is something I would expect to see from my teen peers, but Megan killed herself. On her own free will.
#1: there is a reason why we call them “minors” and that a minor cannot enter into a contract.

#2: People who are diagnoses as depressed are hardly responsible for their actions.

The burden lies on the adult.

    28. USS Yorktown on July 7th, 2009 12:46 am

I wonder if Lori Drew will get a psych evaluation? I would think she is a psychopath.

    29. Scott on July 7th, 2009 6:41 am

It does NOT matter if that was her intention! Get a clue.

When a person drives drunk and wrecks and kills someone, was it there “intention” to kill that person?

    30. Ruben on July 8th, 2009 11:02 am

I agree intent matters little. The drunk driver anology is right on.
I’m wondering if Lori Drew and familiy may be unable to escape prison after-all. She may not face prison behind bars but I would imagine her family is being ostrasized by neighbors and former friends. What a about her daughter, they don’t live in a Los Angeles, or New York or even St. Louis kind of harder to live in anonymity. How would you like Mrs. Drew as an inlaw? She really did her daughter a favor! She thought the alleged rumors were bad before.

    31. USS Yorktown on July 8th, 2009 2:45 pm

What Lori Drew did was wrong regardless of the outcome and intent. That woman is totally off her head. I am pretty sure Lori Drew is being shunned and ostracized, which she rightfully deserves. I have read before they moved, they did take a bunker mentality. Curt Drew used the car to check the mail.

I also wonder about Ashley Grills and her family. I am sure they are shunned as well. I don’t think her daughter is even going to school. Think all the harassment she got. Does Lori Drew even realize how hated she is?

Having Lori Drew as an in-law would suck. Now think about having her as your relative? That would suck even more. That would be like having Osama bin Laden, Seung-Hui Cho, and Fred Phelps as a relative.

    32. Rachel on July 21st, 2009 9:56 pm

Yes, Lori Drew did something horrible and morally wrong, we all get that. But, there are no laws against saying mean things, even to minors. All that she could be legally charged with is making a myspace in a fake account, and possibly harrasment. Any jail time anyone could get her on would be minimal.

Like I said, the major moral “crime” she commited is that she said cruel things to and about this girl. That’s not illegal.

    33. BlindJusticeiscruel on August 7th, 2009 9:46 am

The truth is if you have a daugther with serious mental illiness, you should take care of her by controlling what she reads, what she watches, what she browses. Lori drew did bad, but that girl’s parents are also responsible for her daughter. What were the parents doing?
Has someone gone to jail before for saying you should die to a teenager?

    34. USS Yorktown on August 7th, 2009 12:58 pm

Anyone who blames the Meiers is sick in their heads and needs to seek help IMMEDIATELY. They are no better than Lori Drew. Lori Drew is the world’s worst person according to this computer algorithm which is based on sentiments. It also included Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, and Bernard Madoff were included as well. Bin Laden came at a distant second after Drew.

    35. Mstrguitar on August 7th, 2009 2:18 pm

Please forward this to Lori Drew if anyone knows how to contact her.
How does it feel to be one of the most hated women in America Lori? The one thing that would be justice for the Meiers is that God denies you and sends you to hell with Satan and his minions where you will suffer for all of eternity for your actions. There you will be screaming for mercy, but no one will care and no one will hear your screams. There is nothing that we can do on this earth that will compare to the punishment you will suffer at Gods hands. I look forward to the day when I read that you are DEAD!

    36. billnaples on August 13th, 2009 11:26 am

R – There is probably little point to trying to bring common sense and logic to a post on this blog. The overwhelming sense is a lynch mob mentality exists for most of the posters. That said try to explain to yourself how you can conclude on one hand Ms, Drew’s being responsible for the suicide but refuse to discuss that “hypothetical” case that something else would have been the cause later on. So I will ask you, suppose Josh had been real? Because at the time of the suicide not YOU, not TINA MEIER, and certainly not Megan Meier knew anything different. At that point in time JOSH was real. And further, to not place liability and blame on the shoulders of this misguided young girl’s parents ignores reality. They allowed and in fact encouraged a fragile and medicated 13 year old to engage in an online relationship with a supposed 16 year old boy. And you all seem to be okay with that. Sorry, I for one am not okay. A tragic loss of their daughter to be sure, but they have responsibility as well.

    37. Andy on April 16th, 2010 3:43 am

What has America come to that those 3 fat truckloads of crap haven’t been offed yet by the locals. The two adult women who tormented and tortured that poor little girl are off scott free by the hands of a gay judge. If not in this life but, the one to come Grimmace and Jabba De Hut will answer to the one true judge. I hate to be talking this way but, America needs to stop killing it’s children which are the last bit of innocence we still have left in our degenerate civilization. There will be a day the pedophile, serial killer, child abuse, and child pornographer will have to hold out their hands before all to see and show the blood of innocent beautiful children they have slain then an eternal unquenchable fire awaits them where there will be no escape or eluding of justice.
