MBTA Green Line Trolley Operator Texting Girlfriend When Trolley Crashed Injuring More than 40 Passengers

How can states pass laws regarding driving and texting when people have no common sense to obey the obvious? How irresponsible have cell phone made people? Texting while driving a train, brilliant!

Text_messaging

The MBTA operator of the Green line trolley slammed into a train stopped at Government Center in Boston, MA was reportedly text messaging his girlfriend at the time of the crash. The trolley accident sent 40 passengers to the hospital. 24 year old Aiden Quinn of Attleboro, MA admitted to text messaging at the time of the crash.

“Two detectives have interviewed the operator of the train in the hospital and in the course of that interview he admitted to texting at the time of the crash,” Grabauskus said. The crash happened in a tunnel between Government Center and Park Street stations, sending more than 40 people to area hospitals with cuts, head wounds, and neck and back injuries. None of the injuries was life threatening.

Honestly, how stupid and irresponsible are some people? Texting your girlfriend instead of actually driving a trolley where you are responsible for the passengers on your train. According to MBTA General Manager Dan Grabauskus said if, after an investigation, the operator’s text messages are determined to be the cause he will certainly be fired, and may face criminal charges. The NTSB said that the amount of the damages will be approximately $9.6 million.

About 100 people were evacuated and 49 were taken to area hospitals in wake of trolley crash.

Boston trolley driver was texting at time of crash

“The operator of the striking train was interviewed at the hospital by two detectives,” said Daniel Grabauskas, general manager of the Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority. “He admitted that he was texting at the time of the accident.”

Grabauskus said the operator told detectives that, when he looked up, “it was too late as he applied the brake and the train struck the other trolley.”

UPDATE I: Texting While Driving Remains ‘Serious Issue,’ Officials Say

UPDATE II: Oh Good Lord … Boston Trolley Driver Was Hired With Transgender Minority Status

The 24-year-old Boston trolley driver who allegedly was texting his girlfriend when he slammed into another trolley last week was hired as a minority because of his transgender status, according to a state transportation official …

Another MBTA source said, “Quinn was initially hired as a minority and used her transgender status,” ABC News reported.

The driver, originally known as Georgia Quinn, underwent a female-to-male sex change and switched the sexual designation on his driver’s license, FOX News has confirmed.

It needs to be illegal in all 50 states because some people just don’t have the common sense to know the dangers of doing other things while driving. It amazes me at what I’ve seen people doing while operating a vehicle. When you are behind the wheel of a vehicle, you’re undivided attention needs to be on the road PERIOD! There are other lives at stake. Some people cannot chew gum and walk at the same time and do not need any distractions such as cell phones. What is so important that can’t wait till you can find a safe place to pull over & talk? Is it worth causing an accident? This kind of thing really angers me because it is completely avoidable.

This will NOT be the last instance of a tragedy caused by a worker who didn’t take his responsibilities seriously — and it will not be confined to public transit operators.

I think it’s important to identify root causes here. Sorry to say, I am not the first to notice a new level of immaturity in today’s workers. Specifically, employers are reporting 1) a decreased sense of accountability along with 2) an increased sense of entitlement. Think about it for one minute, and you begin to see that’s a dangerous combination.

I’d go further, but the following, written by a high school teacher, does a better job than I ever could:

Unfortunately, I think imprisonment is necessary here. It may be unfair to the young driver, who perhaps was never taught a sense of social responsibility by the adults in his life. But neither were thousands of young people who are just entering the workforce. The only way to prevent future loss of life and limb may be to “shock and awe” these new workers.

Then, as a more permanent measure, we MUST start teaching kids better values.

Ok, does anyone else think Aiden is a girl? He was hired with the name of Georgia in 2004…I’m not a hater, just stating – whoever you are, whatever you do, you have a JOB and you shouldn’t text while driving MY train -

    10. kitty on May 11th, 2009 9:42 pm

Boston Girl ~ I heard that too on WRKO radio that this person had a license under Georgia and it was the SAME person ~ Aiden… regardless of the sex ~ he/she is hiding something to go under another name…now, that being said ~ how scarey that whoever this person is, got around this one…and got hired ~ (sigh) to begin with… wasn’t there driving violations?

MTA, needs to do a better job looking into the background(s) of their employees ~ this is the 2nd time, the T ~ train slammed into another, due to the conductor operating the T, while texting… 2 years in a row now…imagine, 9 million dollars worth the damage…this recent accident ~ that’s just to the train, not to mention the lawsuits forthcoming and the injury’s incurred… bless those 40 plus who’s lives were changed that day last week…

I went to the Red Sox game on Saturday, took the T.. you couldn’t get the green line straight through ~ and it was backed up unbelievable… so many people were talking about this T-employee and that he just has one lever to move the train ~ fast and slow… and that there should be cameras on the conductors in the future ~ being watched… that’d be interesting !~

on the T-ride home as the trains were so packed and delayed…. we waited for 20 minutes, before even moving… riding from the orange line, and then to the green, then we had walked and back on again ~ buses had to move folks too and what a nightmare ~

Doesn’t matter if Aiden/Georgia was/is a man or woman ~ he/she ~ should NOT have been texting, putting everyone in danger ~

Texting should not be allowed and punishable by law ~… especially endangering the lives of the innocent… while operating any vehicle, machinery, plane, train, bus, car, ~ etc.

      Common sense~!

    11. Dolf on May 12th, 2009 9:15 am

its not criminal in the US (using phone and driving)?

    12. Carpe on May 12th, 2009 12:32 pm

      …and the plot thickens.

Texting Trolley Driver Is Transgendered Male

See, they need to post that kind of crap on the trolley door. Because this brother would have put on his walking shoes and hiked his hiney on back home.

I ain’t gonna get taken out by Mrs. Doubtfire’s poor choices.
