How Offensive, Nothing Says Merry Christmas Like Playboy and a Nude Virgin Mary Cover Controversy

More on the war on Christmas … Mexican Playboy magazine style.

In the PC, do not offend anyone world we live in  …we cannot say Merry Christmas and Playboy_mexico_virgin_mary2honor the birth of Christ but somehow “porn and religion” are supposed to be acceptable. How is it even considered, ok and free speech for Mexican Playboy magazine to have a picture of a naked Virgin Mary on their December cover? Just how  insulting can one possibly be to Christians and Mexicans? Some how this is supposed to be provocative and cute. The December issue published only days before a major Mexican festival dedicated to the mother of Jesus, The Virgin of Guadalupe.

Imagine, just imagine if Playboy depicted a male model of a naked Muhammad on their cover along with some female virgins. Muslims went nuts over a cartoon, imagine what would take place with a life-like mockery.

The December issue features model Maria Florencia Onori posing as the Virgin wearing nothing but an angelic white cloth.

The release was timed for the day before Mexico’s traditional Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a celebration of an apparition of the Virgin in the town.

Its headline reads in Spanish: “We adore you, Mary.”

How offensive are things supposed to get before the moral majority stands up and takes Christmas back? As stated in “The Week,” this is offensive to all … “As a guy who is indifferent about religion, even I find this offensive”

Losing Our Religion

The perpetual war on Christmas and Christianity continues. We cannot say Christ, we cannot say Merry Christmas, but some how it is ok to mock Christmas. We can’t say Merry Christmas during the Christmas holiday because we may offend people, we can’t have Christmas trees in college libraries, we can’t sing religious Christmas carols but

TMZ: Catholics are raising holy hell over Playboy’s decision to put a naked Virgin Mary on the cover

The President of the Catholic League tells TMZ: “Playboy’s juxtaposition of the sacred with the profane is a game that many have played, but to exploit Catholicism and insult Latinos in the same breath is novel.

UPDATE I: Nude Virgin Mary cover prompts Playboy apology

It is a rather hollow apology as how could anyone have thought that combining porn and religion was not going to be received with outrage?

The Virgin of Guadalupe, said to have appeared to a sixteenth century Indian peasant, is Mexico’s most revered Roman Catholic figure and the annual pilgrimage to the Mexico City basilica dedicated to her is one of the world’s largest religious events.

In a statement, Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc said the Mexican edition of the magazine is published by a licensee, and the company did not approve or endorse the cover.

“While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies,” the statement said.

Raul Sayrols, publisher of Playboy Mexico, said in a statement, “The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.”

Another outrage perpetrated against Christianity by the soulless, godless secular progressives. The lack of outrage is a testament either to how numb Christians have become to it all, or to the ever-growing number who have joined the enemy. Some, ahem, “Christians” have even taken up Sunday morning basketball in lieu of attending church services.

      q. When will this crap ever stop?

      a. Never, as long as MSM continues to wield its considerable influence over the unthinking masses.

Merry Christmas, believers. All others can go play basketball with Lucifer.

ha ha! My vote would be for a David and Goliath cover on playgirl! PS Manly men only, please!

From an agnostic pov…Please say what you want. I love hearing “Merry Christmas” and sing carols w/the best of them, if it bothers them than they need to get a life. Honestly some people out there have too much time on there hands to b*tch and moan about everything and everyone. I’ve been agnostic all my life (30+) with a very catholic family and husband, even did the whole 1.5 hr mass with the lovely 6 wks of classes for them, why… cause I love them and this is what they believe in and I respect that because I respect them. The only religious thing that peeves me is a prayer before a sporting event, I figure if a bunch of men want to play a gladiator sport they shouldn’t be praying to a god about it, but maybe there praying for good weather?!

I find the cover ~ Most distasteful as I am sure though …The Man who created the Cover Design will never have to face an Elderly Hispanic Woman and Her Thoughts. Because if he did .. he would have to Own a Bit of his so called ART … NOT COOL. NOT Tasteful at all. BUT then that’s how Madonna made her Millions ..and still does ~ off of Religious ..No its not… Themes.

      I don’t get it!

What does the virgin at Guadalupe have to do with Christmas. This was a woman, not to be confused with the virgin Mary, who was sacrificed to the gods in a pagan ceremony.

      Please explain:

Who, exactly, do you want to take Christmas back from? Christmas is alive and well, living in the heart of every pagan alive. It has nothing to do with the birth of Christ, just as sacrificing virgins to pagan gods has nothing to do with a virgin birth. There are twelve issues every year that, in my opinion, lay women victim to sexism, exploitation, rape and murder. Where is the outcry against that?

    8. tyler on December 13th, 2008 5:18 pm

spare me the phony outrage!not everyone believes in fairytales.get over your war on christmas because its in your head and doesnt exist.Too much O’reilly and right wing radio for you=lose your mind.

Spare me you telling me how I feel.

      Phony outrage?

Will we be attending midnight mass this year?

      Please…

So you’re saying that Playboy is the Grinch
      that stole Christmas?

      Here’s some Breaking News:

      Christmas is fake!

      .

      Attend your masses,

      celebrate your holidays as you wish;

but, please, don’t try to connect

that which is pagan with holiness.

      .

      Happy Shopping!

I don’t care about this…why should anyone? Most of the people who complain are probably the ones who have annual subscriptions anyway! Spare me thy holier than thou b.s…..get a life…and live your own as best as you can. There are much more important issues out there than who is naked..who is doing what..who is wearing this or that? I think Hef is the man…..I would love to be in his shoes.

    12. Richard on December 13th, 2008 8:18 pm

As the introduction to this thread states, it seems to be acceptable to slander the Catholic belief to any degree … and resenting it is somehow ‘un-cool.’

Also as the introduction states … people can, and HAVE, gotten their throats slit for doing comparable things to Islam.

But trashing one’s own cultural antecedents, I guess, is okay.

I’ve certainly seen worse … but somehow I don’t think that this will go over well in Mexico.

By the way, the literal meaning of ‘Renaissance’ is rebirth. What was being reborn in the photo … or perhaps it’s better not to ask.

    13. Sharon Chicago on December 13th, 2008 11:18 pm

I am sick and tired of this filthy Godless society of hollywood characters.. Playboy, Willie Nelson and Saturday night live among other comics doing their blasphamous (sp)Christmas skits on TV. If the Muslims take over America these people don’t have far to go to join them…just walk across the street!

    14. HOPE on December 14th, 2008 3:19 am

To think that Mary of Guadalupe ended the practice of human sacrifice in Mexico or further south in Central and South America is naive… a folklore.

I think Playboy got the idea from the new blasphemous book by Charles Webb. “Sex with THE Virgin Mary” published by thekickasspress.com mocks Mary and the Catholic Church.

    16. ANewGirl on December 14th, 2008 7:58 am

      Sharon in Chicago says:

“I am sick and tired of this filthy Godless society of hollywood characters..”

while I’m certainly no Choir Girl myself—I couldn’t agree with that statement more. When does it all end? While we know sex sells…to me there is a certain line which is controversial at best regarding “Religion” that shouldn’t be crossed. Personally, I did not find the photo offensive, but rather the connotation behind depicting the Virgin Mary as some kind of a seductive tramp is inappropriate no matter how many magazine it sells!

    17. caesu on December 14th, 2008 1:07 pm

i don’t get the outrage about a naked Mary.
i thought the fairytales say that they walked around stark naked in the Garden of Eden.
and Jesus is depicted hanging naked from the Cross.
get over it, it thought only muslims were still the fake outrage business.
all these religions might want to merge their phony outrage businesses, because the Christian one seems to be going bust.
a maybe ask for a bailout.

is there somewhere where i can see the inside of this magazine?

    18. ANewGirl on December 15th, 2008 11:22 am

#17- Yeah, Ceasu…go to the local Newsstand or Drugstore and buy yourself a copy!

I didn’t see the outrage over this photo either—but I think many are missing the point of the post.

You do raise some excellent points in your comments also.

    19. Michelle on December 15th, 2008 12:59 pm

      #17 I’m sure you don’t.

They are not fairytales but I don’t expect someone with your attitude to understand that. Yes, Adam & Eve were naked until they disobeyed God and became aware of their nakedness and was ashamed and covered themselves. No, Jesus was not naked on the cross, he was wearing a cloth around his waist. I don’t have to get over it. Do not tell me that my outrage is fake, you do not and should not presume to know how we feel.

It appears to me that you are the type of person that enjoys starting controversies about anything you feel will upset Christians. You, sir or ma’am sound like a very unhappy person. Maybe you are just lonely. Maybe you didn’t have enough love as a child.

      I will pray for you

      May God Bless you

    20. Miss-Underestmated on December 15th, 2008 2:59 pm

Hope, I will pray for you at Midnight Mass. I’ll add a prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mother for you too. I am Catholic and proud.

      and something else.
there are numerous centuries old paintings of Jesus suckling on Mary’s teet.
      http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/06/23/article-1028888-01B7392E00000578-245_468x602.jpg
so i guess you disapprove of those too?
      get over it.
it are all natural depictions of God’s Creation.
      or is God’s Creation offense?
i don’t think He would appreciate someone with such an opinion.

    22. Michelle on December 15th, 2008 8:59 pm

#21 Nope I will not get over it. There is a difference between someone being breastfed and someone walking around naked or being naked on a magazine cover that is mocking the Virgin Mary.

Of course God’s creations are not offensive to me. I didn’t say they were. I said that representing the virgin Mary as something other than A Holy Woman is offensive.

You just like to argue and disagree with anything religious.

      I will pray for you

    23. HOPE on December 16th, 2008 3:16 pm

I posted this lastnight, but it got deleted from the thread:

      Miss U?

      I’m sorry for offending you.

    24. votershatefreedom on December 18th, 2008 8:16 pm

@21 – as offensive as telling all atheists they are immoral and will go to hell. or assuming all muslims would become overly violent and murderous for a similar “offense”. please, get over yourself and your god, you’re playing right into Heff’s hand.

    25. Marshall Berra on December 31st, 2008 1:50 pm

There is nothing wrong with this cover. If you don’t like it, do not buy playboy. It is called “free speech” for a reason. You can say you don’t like it and they can print it if they want. Plain and simple! Don’t use your beliefs to force others to believe or do as you say!
