British Teachers’ Union Representative Chris Keates Says “Teachers Who Engage in Consensual Sex With Teen Pupils Shouldn’t Face Prosecution”

WTF!!! According to Chris Keates teaching is about reading writing and bedding your pupils. This is just what parents are looking for when they send their children off to school … predator teachers with no accountability for their actions. British Education Rep justifies predator teacers.

Chris Keates, a British teachers’ union representative has stated that teachers who engage in consensual sex with students over the age of 16 should not be prosecuted.  16? Why not make it 15 or 14 or 13 or 12 for that matter if one is using this insane logic? That is correct folks, sex laws are unfair to teachers as they should have no responsibility if a teacher has an affair with a student. Consensual sex? By the very definition it cannot be consensual when one is a minor and the teacher holds a position of authority.

Chris Keates, the general secretary of the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, said in an interview to be broadcast in the U.K. on Monday that teachers who have sex with pupils over the age of consent are guilty of a mere “error in professional judgment,” and should not be placed on the sex offenders register, the Mail reported.

“There is a real anomaly in the law that we are concerned about,” the Mail quoted Keates as saying. “That is that if a teacher has a relationship with a pupil at the school at which they teach—it could be an 18-year-old pupil—then that teacher can be prosecuted and can end up on the sex offenders register.”

Exactly what does Chris Keates thinks is going to be a deterrent from teachers having sex with their students, detention? Let’s just slap them on the hand and say don’t do it again. If teachers do not like the punishment of being labeled a sex offender, then don’t do the crime.

She said: “If a teacher has a relationship with a pupil at the school at which they teach, it could be an 18-year-old pupil in sixth form, then that teacher can be prosecuted and end up on the sex offenders register.

“Clearly there have to be appropriate disciplinary sanctions in the school where a teacher works to make sure that inappropriate relationships don’t develop.

“But it does seem a step too far, when there has been a consensual relationship, to put that person on the sex offenders register when, in fact, they could have a perfectly legitimate relationship with an 18-year-old at another school.”

I wonder if the “age of consent” in Britain is 16.

The logic of the argument might be that if a kid is legally eligible to have relations at that age (what a joke, as if anyone cares about the law), then there would be no reason he/she couldn’t have relations with his/her teacher, just like any other adult.

I still see some problems with this … will the same teacher bedding the student be grading his/her homework? Or assigning punishments?

Or making recommendations about good conduct?

Can poor performance in the bedroom affect grades and/or recommendations to university?

The whole notion is bizarre … but so is everything else these days.

One wonders whether Chris Keates is seeking nomination for teacher of the year….

And, of course, the omnipresent threat …

Would any student who failed a course sue the teacher, school, Parliament, and for all I know Her Majesty the Queen on the ground that the grade was a response to a sexual overture from the teacher that was declined?

hmmm… i know when i was over there they allowed the students in private boarding school 2 glasses of wine a night in the student center if they were over 16. perhaps that’s the age of consent?

how convenient, they can get liquored up & laid all at school by paid staff.

The age of consent in the UK is 16, as it is in the US. So I really do not understand what the fuss is about!

the fuss is about a person of authority being able to legally have sex with a student. really a conflict of interest when the same person whom you rely on for a passing grade is making sexual advances to you.

Excuse me, but I am afraid (once again)

I believe the phrase we are looking for is:

      WTF ??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the age of consent is 16 here in the UK, i heard something about this in the national press but didnt take much notice, my first reaction was, as above, WTF!!!!!!, i CAN see the problem that the age of consent being 16, and therefore, under the law, a teacher having a sexual relationship with a sixteen year old from a different school would NOT be committing a crime, seems crazy too me. On the other hand a teacher, newly qualified may NOT be much older than a sixth year pupil in our high schools, seventeen nearly eighteen. I think ANY relationships between teachers and pupils should be discouraged and action taken as other posters have stated it opens up both parties to being taken advantage of.

They want to legalize foster parents having sex with foster children, the age of consent for the NASUWT issue is 18, the target issue is the fifty year old teacher dropping his schoolgirl lover off at the school up the road before starting work, it is obvious what the spin is, the NASUWT is trying to diminsh ‘disrepute’ provisions. For eample, stripping isn’t illegal, but a teacher gets sacked for it, so public confidence can get the 50 year old with a schoolgirl lover up the road sacked. The NASUWT has major schoolgirl problems, thousands of them, if one has a schoolgirl fetish, there is only one union to join, and most of that kind of ‘teacher’ did. So they spend a lot of time talking about schoolgirls.
