MySpace Mom Lori Drew (Josh Evans) Indicted For Role in online Hoax of Suicide Death of 13 Year Old Megan Meier

It was the internet MySpace hoax that disgusted the world. The result was the suicide of 13 year old Megan Meier. People cried out for justice and initially there was none. Finally, there appears to be JUSTICE FOR MEGAN.

Meier_megan_teen

(13 year old Megan Meier)

Justice is served in one of the most sick and pathetic cases of cyberbullying on record. Its bad enough when pre-teens and teens do it, but when an adult does it to a teenager … it defies all logic. Let this be a shot across the bow to future cyberbulliers, prosecutors are breaking new legal ground on the internet. If one thinks they can hide behind their key board and do anything, think again. To “keyboard cowards” every where, there will be consequences to threats made and your actions.

49 year old Lori Drew, or should we say her faux online persona Josh Evans, was indicted in her role that led to the suicide of 13 year old Megan Meier. Its about time! It was an internet MySpace hoax that will most likely change the rules as to personal conduct on the web. Lori Drew created a MySpace account and began chatting with Megan Meier under the false identity of a 16 year old boy, Josh Evans. Lori Drew has been charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress on the girl.

Lori_drew

(Lori Drew)

She was charged with conspiracy and fraudulently gaining access to someone else’s computer.

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006, allegedly after receiving a dozen or more cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

Salvador Hernandez, assistant agent in charge of the Los Angeles FBI office, called the case heart-rending.

“The Internet is a world unto itself. People must know how far they can go before they must stop. They exploited a young girl’s weaknesses,” Hernandez said. “Whether the defendant could have foreseen the results, she’s responsible for her actions.”

Key events in the Megan Meier case

The Feds acted after state authorities said they had no grounds to prosecute the woman, despite national outrage at her behavior. It sadly appeared at one point that no charges would be filed as Missouri prosecutors could find no crimes to charge Lori Drew with. It was simply criminal.

She set up a MySpace profile for the imaginary boy, complete with a picture of a random handsome youth, and then contacted Megan. “Josh Evans” chatted with Megan for about six weeks. He called her “sexi” and offered to take her out on a date.

Megan’s parents said their daughter, who struggled with her weight, was thrilled by the attention from a “hot” boy.

But then “Josh” turned on Megan. Among the last things Megan saw online on Oct. 16, 2006, were postings saying “Megan Meier is a slut” and “Megan Meier is fat.”

Her parents said the last message from “Josh” said, “Everybody hates you. … The world would be a better place without you.”

Megan hanged herself in her bedroom closet. She was about to turn 14.

An adult knowingly targeted a teen to harass her. WTF. It would be bad enough if a false account was used to harass a stranger on lone, but someone they knew?

This woman is how old? Nothing too premeditated here.

This is JUSTICE….what a filthy pig this woman is…I hope she rots in jail. To take advantage of a little girl like this..its just horrible…

    3. Miklo on May 16th, 2008 8:15 am

Wonder if Lori Drew thinks her “MySpace” prank was funny now?!

I’d love to be a fly on the wall when they throw the book at her!!

Somebody ought to send her letters in prison signed “Josh Evans”.

    4. Jerry from Ohio on May 16th, 2008 9:05 am

This is truly an American tragedy This woman should forfeit her freedom and do some time in fed prison so that there is an example as to what cyber Bullying can get you .
Let us hope that the judge or jury sees this as the despicable action that it was , It may be too late for Megan but this may save some other poor child with a low self concept
I am sorry but this woman ” Lori Drew AKA: (Josh Evans )makes my stomach turn !

As society seems to become more and more amoral, actions like these probably will be more frequent.

I know it’s a forlorn, naive wish … but if only people could act with humanity and decency, so much of the stuff that goes on today wouldn’t be seen. Of course, that’s like saying that if everyone would act rightly, we wouldn’t need police.

The world seems to get sicker by the day.

    6. david r on May 16th, 2008 9:53 am

I hope Lori Drew’s legal defense bills bankruptcy her and her husband (he married her for better or worse), and she ends up in jail surrounded by violent, zombie lesbians. It is a shame that a judge can’t simply order her to be placed in a pillory in front of the courthouse, with Megan’s parents free to beat her with a broom handle for as long as they like.

    7. richard on May 16th, 2008 9:55 am

For what it’s worth, which isn’t much, I think that Megan looks like a very pretty girl, older than her actual years.

    8. murph on May 16th, 2008 10:30 am

Lori Drew is getting her day in court but will not get what she deserves. Lori Drew played with Megan’s life and pushed her over the edge to death. Mrs. Drew tried to lie her way out of this by blaming everyone but herself. There will be a special place in hell for you and please tell Joran hello when you get there!

    9. bun on May 16th, 2008 11:01 am

Me thinks how awful if this fat, ugly woman were to hang herself while in jail. Wheels of justice grind slowly but very fine.

    10. Dayhiker on May 16th, 2008 11:44 am

This really is a tragedy. I hope they do make an example out of this woman with some prison time to set a precedent for future cases. What she did to that poor girl is just sick!

    11. MichGirl71 on May 16th, 2008 2:02 pm

I hope they throw the book at Lori Drew. She needs to be made an example of for what she so thoughtlessly and maliciously did to Megan.

Lori Drew is the fat, ugly one. I hope she sees Megan in her dreams for the rest of her life.

    14. bob on May 16th, 2008 4:03 pm

What laws did Lori Drew break? She was cruel and inhuman and she lied, but did she break the law? It looks like she just broke a minor law for accessing computers.

    15. Koryn on May 16th, 2008 4:46 pm

Okay, honestly. Wasn’t the girl a little dumb herself? She knew “Josh Evans” for a little over a month. I’m not heartless. I just think that she should have been smarter than that. Kids need to toughen up a bit, don’t you think? No one’s putting any kind of blame on Megan or her parents. I don’t know about you all, but when I was 13 I had sense enough not to kill myself because one guy didn’t like me. (Trust me. I was insecure and the guy I liked hated my guts. I had worse stuff done to me than this.) It just pisses me off how teenagers can be so stupid. It ruins it for the rest of us.

    16. Miklo on May 16th, 2008 4:47 pm

      bob,

Lori Drew’s actions were steeped in mental anguish/cruelty and fraud.

An example should be made of her actions.

    17. katablog on May 16th, 2008 6:25 pm

making remarks about Lori Drew’s appearance certainly drops down to her level. # 4 is right. Where is our humanity? It isn’t Lori’s looks that have anything to do with this – it was Lori’s actions.

    18. richard on May 16th, 2008 9:12 pm

Whatever the legal issues involved here may be, certainly there seems to have been an amount of calculated cruelty on the part of the older woman.

I have no idea what previous connections there might have been between these two people. And possibly the girl “over-reacted” … which is an easy thing for people who don’t know her to say.

But to me, the main point is that it seems that Ms. Drew, for whatever reasons, chose to make the life of this girl miserable. Why, why, WHY?

    19. bob on May 16th, 2008 9:29 pm

Miklo, Lori Drew was cruel and inhuman and evil. But did she commit criminal fraud? Impersonating a police officer is a crime, impersonating a schoolboy friend isn’t a crime. I don’t think.

    20. Scarrlett on May 17th, 2008 4:36 am

You know that little box that appears when you are signing up for things on the Internet? It says “Terms and conditions” with alot of blah, blah, blah…….and at the end you must check “I Accept” to continue….

How many of you have ever actually read all of that blah, blah, blah??? Because in that is where the charges have been found.I am sure Lori did not read the content as she was busy planing her lies to send to such a young girl who SHE KNEW had issues about herself and suffered a medical condition. Shame on the whole bunch of them!!

#15…..Good for you for being strong but,you were not up against an adult. If this adult had not done this Maybe Megan would be alive.

    21. Vicki on May 17th, 2008 7:08 am

Thank you Scarrlett…At 13 years ofage you are going thru alot of changes and to go up against an “ADULT” is wrong on the supposed adult…what a LOSER lori is. She has no morals or ethics or no life to do this to a child.

and so if Lori looked like a gorgous movie star would it be okay???what the blank does how she looks matter????Come on Juvi’s,,be a tad more mature…

    22. Scared Monkeys on May 17th, 2008 8:01 am

What is simply amazing is that Drew is saying that her actions were not intentional.

      How could they not be?

She knowingly set up a false identification on MySpace to target a teenager who she knew.

Um, in legaleze … that is premeditation with malice and forethought.
      R

    23. Scared Monkeys on May 17th, 2008 8:04 am

      #19 Bob,

Fraud is the intentional deception with intent.

Fraud is defined to be “an intentional perversion of truth” or a “false misrepresentation of a matter of fact” which induces another person to “part with some valuable thing belonging to him or to surrender a legal right”. http://criminal-law.freeadvice.com/white_collar_crimes/fraud.htm

In criminal law, fraud is the crime or offense of deliberately deceiving another in order to damage them – usually, to obtain property or services unjustly. Fraud can be accomplished through the aid of forged objects. In the criminal law of common law jurisdictions it may be called “theft by deception,” “larceny by trick,” “larceny by fraud and deception” or something similar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraud

The fraud here was not for a monetary person gain, but to get back at someone or cause harm to that person. By definition, to see someone intentionally hurt is a form of a personal gain. Otherwise, why would one intentionally want to target some one and go thru all the hoops to do so as Drew did?

She did perpetrate a criminal fraud.
      R

    24. richard on May 17th, 2008 8:10 am

She also misappropriated a boy’s photo. Does that constitute identity theft of a kind? She apparently didn’t use it for financial gain or deceit of that kind … only to torment the girl.

Whatever the legal situation, the sheer indecency of her actions jumps out at you.

Our society these days reduces everything to legal issues, probably because the sense of decency has been eroded, possibly beyond repair.

How can we restore the balance?

    25. bun on May 17th, 2008 8:44 am

Hey, take another look at this woman…looks like our old friend, Linda Tripp…

    26. brie. on May 17th, 2008 9:14 am

How sadistic some people can be…..pleasure in causing other’s pain…I feel that she had to break some laws otherwise Megan would still be alive…this is such a tragedy….and this low life says it wasn’t intentional…in a pig’s eye!!!!

      ……………………JAIL…………………….

    27. Scared Monkeys on May 17th, 2008 9:50 am

Guys … Would you stop with what she looks like and try and focus on the actions of what she did!!!

Do you not understand what she did to this 13 year old girl?

      From the post:

But then “Josh” turned on Megan. Among the last things Megan saw online on Oct. 16, 2006, were postings saying “Megan Meier is a slut” and “Megan Meier is fat.”

What Lori Drew looks like has nothing to do with what she did. FOCUS!!! Ted Bundy, a serial killer, was a handsome man. Does that make him good? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Bundy Do not sink to the depths that Drew did.

Do many of you hear yourself? This woman said evil and rotten things that caused Megan to commit suicide, yet the reactions from many are focused on the indicted women’s looks??? Are you joking!!!

People who commit crimes against children do not always look like the boogy man … they look like the person in front of you in the store check out line.

    28. A New Girl on May 17th, 2008 10:02 am

##15-Koryn—While I can appreciate your anger at how “stupid” teenagers can be regarding internet safety….this does not take away from the fact that an ADULT participated in the abuse of a minor.

Give me a break- this woman, Lori Drew sincerely needs to undergo psychiatric evaluation. What in the HELL was she thinking?? Her actions contributed to the DEATH/SUICIDE of a minor. This didn’t have to happen, people.

I, for one am glad that she will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Her excuses are bogus. Lori Drew knew what she was doing and is responsible for abusing her priviledges and taking advantage of this poor girl who is no longer around to defend herself.

    29. A New Girl on May 17th, 2008 10:15 am

P.S. I agree with Red– cannot believe how superficial people are on here posting about how someone looks….Lori Drew was sending Megan messages telling her she was “fat” and calling her a “slut”…maybe since we are on the topic…Ms. Drew needs to really look at herself in the mirror……Appears to me as if this woman needs to lay off the doughnuts herself!!!!!!

All that aside….it doesn’t matter what she looks like ! She is a disgusting individual whose behavior and actions are dispicable. She is evil, and a POOR EXCUSE for a MOTHER. Hopefully when the verdict is handed down – Lori Drew will also lose physical custody of her own children since she is obviously not fit to raise them. She clains she did all this to GET INFORMATION and find out what others were saying about her own daughter? Are you KIDDING me???

I think the phrase that should come into play here one loud and clear WTF ??????????????

    30. bun on May 17th, 2008 10:18 am

O.K. Scared Monkeys…it isn’t about what this woman looks like, but I find it lunacy that this woman was telling the young girl that SHE was ugly and fat. Maybe “lunacy” is the key word here, she needs help, but she also needs to be off the streets, make that “keyboards”. There must be a meaness threshold at which one gets her computer taken away.

    31. JusticeforNatalee on May 17th, 2008 10:40 am

I hope the hag spends a lot of time in jail for picking on a vulnerable teen.

Throw the book at the ugly loser.

    32. Scared Monkeys on May 17th, 2008 11:29 am

      #30.

Agreed! Here is a fact of life of people who are consumed with hate. They project their very thought, feelings and attitudes upon others.

However, the key thing to focus on is that hate comes in all types of packages.

I think its fair to say that because this woman probably hates herself, she would project that hate to an innocent 13 year old.

Megan was a beautiful 13 yo old who fell prey to a hateful adult. One that targeted her. Lori Drew deserves the book to be thrown at her.

What I want to remind all is that the ugly on the inside is what counts more than on the outside. Drew appears to just have been both.

    33. Happy_Go_Lucky on May 17th, 2008 1:18 pm

      Lori Drew obviously has issues.

That said, she did not “make” the girl kill herself, any more than her criticizers “made” her get fat.

She should be punished for being a scumbag, yes (don’t you wish all scumbags could be punished?) But for “making” someone kill themself, someone they never met, no. I don’t care how old you are, you are accountable for your own actions. Maybe if that was taught more every flippin’ kid in America would not blame everyone and everything on everyone else but themselves. Yes, they are impressionable, but there is obviously a lack of guidance going on that is pervasive in our culture.

This is not justice for Megan. That would have been someone everseeing what she was doing and raising her to not live by what imaginary friends think of her. Sorry, but it’s true.

The crazy lady getting the book thrown at her is however justified, just to get one more scum off the street. No telling what she would do next!

    34. kitty on May 17th, 2008 8:45 pm

Today’s local newspaper had an article written by Chris Blank (AP) regarding Mo. Lawmakers vote to bar cyber harrassment. Responding to this case.

“It was approved 106-23 in the House and 30-0 in the Senate” and now goes to the Governor. Unfortunately at the time, the police had no applicable state law to file charges against Drew… now, for the future, there will be… How very, very sad, that this young girl was so harrassed and bullyed by this determined woman (Drew)… shame! I’m so sorry, for the Meier’s family and the loss of their beautiful daughter… as other folks have posted, it TRULY, is a tradgedy ~ my prayers to the Meier’s family.

    35. Michelle on May 18th, 2008 3:47 pm

This girl is a child and did nothing wrong. Children rely on adults to teach them how to live properly and productively in this world. I do have a question though. Where was this girl’s computer in the house? Were her parents monitoring her while on the computer, especially since they have publicly said she had problems with depression? Please do not get me wrong; I am not blaiming Meagan nor her parents for what happened. I do want parents to see that it is extremely important to monitor what their young adolescents do on their computer. Young adolescents have no business being secretive on a computer, however given the opportunity to they will be. More parental control over what their young teens do can prevent many many problems in the future. That said, ANY adult preying on a teen/young child is SCUM.

    36. Miss Katie on May 18th, 2008 4:02 pm

sounds to me like this mother tried to put herself at her daughters age… when she joined in on this cruelty to another girl old enough to be her own daughter…
sometimes parents want to be seen as cool by their kids and their friends… that they stoop to their age level and do things that are not the norm behaviour for a parent.
she did not act as a parent… she wasnt responsible enough to end this game she took part in… she wanted to be her daughters friend and not her mother oviously… by not ending it before it was to late!!!…. she destroyed someones life….she should be punished and held responsible for her and her daughters negligent actions….
she not only affected the girl that died… but she affected all family members and friends of the dead girls….. how needless of a death…..
she left a family mourning…. she has scarred them for life…and in the process has took part in her own daughters mental instability for life…….

      what a disgrace……

I’m still disappointed with Missouri prosecuters they have a police report where Drew states she participated in this hoax and that she said the conversation turned sexual but continued the hoax and still sent Megan messages….I thought that alone was illegal.

Smoking gun has the police reports.

Also Grills should be indicted also….she is just as guilty as Drew….she states she made the final nasty message to drive Megan away which is stupid as she only needed to close the account before the hoax went to far.

Lori Drew was too involved in the girly drama that was occuring. Infact, it sounds as if she, herself, was the one who was instigating the childish drama-behavior! She stooped down to a level that NO PARENT should ever do. NO ADULT should ever do—
She is a total piece of shit for trying to be all friendly with the family (parents) afterwards! I cant believe that she’d play such childish games, (that ended up in a death of a child) and then turn around and expect for nothing to come about it. She even tried to cover it all with a dumb letter that says that she wanted to talk to the parents about how ‘unstable’ their daughter was—LIKE SHE IS A STABLE PERSON HERSELF! IS SHE FKN KIDDING??? She even stated that after she wrote them a letter, they turned around and got hostile towards her (of course…..ANYONE OF US WOULD’VE!), and then she says that at that point, she knew that Megan’s parents werent level minded.
THIS WOMAN, LORI DREW, IS A NO GOOD, PIECE OF SHIT.
