Missing Norwegian Dawn Cruise Ship Passenger Mindy Jordan Went Overboard was “Clowning Around”

Clowning Around or something far worse? Parents of missing Mindy Jordan state their daughter was in an abusive relationship.

Mindy Jordan has been missing since Sunday May 11, 2008 when she Mindy_jordanreportedly went overboard the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship. Search efforts were done, but to no avail. According to Jorge Caputo, Jordan’s boyfriend, Mindy Jordan was clowning around and she fell over. Clowning around?

Julie August of Mt. Laurel, N.J., tells the South Jersey Courier Post this morning that her sister, Mindy Jordan, is the missing passenger. She says she and other relatives learned of the 46-year-old nurse’s disappearance from her sister’s boyfriend and traveling companion, Jorge Caputo, who was there at the time of the incident.

“He said she was clowning around and she fell over,” August told the Courier Post, a sister paper to USA TODAY. “Who knows? We weren’t there.”

Relatives of the missing 46 year old nurse Mindy Jordan are calling for an investigation into what happened as they think something is wrong with the story and does not add up. Smell test #1: What person has their spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend go overboard and continues on the cruise to its destination as opposed to staying with the search for their missing loved one?

Clowning around or not, Jordan’s distraught relatives are calling for an investigation into the incident, which occurred just off the coast of New Jersey.

“It’s just not adding up,” August tells the Courier Post. “My sister is a professional. She’s a nurse and a mother. This is not somebody who’s going to be jumping up on a rail.”

Jordan’s mother, Louise Horton of Bordentown, N.J., expressed frustration with Jordan’s boyfriend to WPVI-TV, an ABC affiliate in Philadelphia. She told the station that when she talked to him on the ship, she asked him what he was going to do about the situation, and “he said, ‘well I guess I’m just going to have to go on to Bermuda.’ So, he’s continuing his trip as usual.”

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City launched two Dolphin AC Coast Guardhelicopters during the night that spent several hours searching for the missing New Jersey woman. FBI now involved in search for missing cruise passenger.

The mother of missing Mindy Jordan says that her daughter was in an abusive relationship according to CBS2.

The woman who fell to her apparent death off a cruise ship on Mother’s Day off the coast of Atlantic City was the victim of an abusive relationship, her mother told CBS 2.

Louise Horton said she saved her daughter’s voice message fearing the worst – that because of an abusive relationship, she wouldn’t come home.

“Abusive relationships don’t get better,” she told CBS 2.

“That would be totally out of character. She was 4-foot-10, weighed about 98 pounds. She wouldn’t go near a rail, this fellow beat her a couple of times,” said Andrew August, Jordan’s father.

“He was abusive and controlling,” said Horton. “She would never jump. She had two children she loved.”

UPDATE I: Woman’s fall from cruise ship caught on tape

The line issued a statement late Wednesday saying surveillance cameras on the inside and the outside of the ship caught the entire sequence of events leading up to and following the deadly fall of Mindy Jordan, 46, of Pine Hill, N.J., and the line offered a minute-by-minute synopsis of what occurred.

The details are likely to end growing speculation that foul play was involved in the incident Sunday aboard the Norwegian Dawn, which has drawn national attention in the media. Jordan’s family has fueled the flames of the speculation the past three days by publically criticizing Jordan’s boyfriend and traveling companion, Jorge Caputo, who was with her on the ship.

UPDATE II: Report of video of woman’s fall doesn’t satisfy mother

A mother and a 46-year-old woman “clowning around” in a way to jeopardize her safety? No way.

Accidentally falling over? Again, no way … these ships have high railings and barriers to prevent this sort of thing.

So what happened? Not much choice left, is there?

Unfortunately, the total absence of effective security or trained personnel on cruise ships makes going on them a risk at the best of times.

These are not the best of times.

Check the Web site of http://www.internationalcruisevictims.org for more horror stories. There are many, many more.

Could this be another George Smith type case? The likelihood of a passenger going over on their own and the actions of the significant other are paralleling.

I agree with Richard a professional woman (Nurse)
A mother with children at home and a Known abusive relationship ??? No Way and for this man to continue on his vacation ?? Now what the Hell is that saying ?? I know that if my Lady had an accident such as that they couldn’t keep me on that ship I would be with the search party ! somethings fishy here and it is not all in the water either .

The police or FBI should check to see if there are any LARGE INSURANCE POLICIES,TRUST FUNDS OR ESTATES. I SMELL A RAT.

    6. brenda on May 14th, 2008 6:45 am

I believe Scott Peterson continued golfing and calling his girlfriend the same week his pregnant wife went “missing”…right?

ONLY way I can see her moving about the balcony is if she were trying to get away from him (boyfriend) for one reason or another. Like he wouldn’t let her out of the room and she was afraid.

More likely he pushed her over. How sad!

    7. Carpe on May 14th, 2008 7:35 am

It’s wild to me that they seem to happen so frequently now! I can’t name a case from the
seventies or eighties. Now, they seem to have
one or two a year. It blows my mind, which doesn’t
take all that much to do anymore.

    8. brenda on May 14th, 2008 8:53 am

Yeah Carpe…and those are just the ones that either make news.

    9. brie. on May 14th, 2008 9:06 am

He went on with his vacation to Bermuda, just like nothing happened, that is pretty awful….guess we know what that relationship meant to him…. why do women stay in abusive relationships…I guess some can’t get out….did she think things would get better if they went on a cruise…maybe she won money in the casino and he saw that as only more fun for him in Bermuda…I don’t think she was clowning around and doing something stupid!!!!

More and more you are hearing about people going overboard….

    10. Sharon Chicago on May 14th, 2008 11:15 am

They should just hall him off to jail! She is 4ft 11 and note the picture of the guys standing by the rail ont he ship …railing goes chest high… He picked her up and pitched her into the raging sea… I am so sorry she went on this trip with him or that she did not leave him.

    11. Miss-Underestimated on May 14th, 2008 2:16 pm

What a shame. What is worse is that our daughters will/cannot get out of these relationships.

I hope this is really investigate and not just SETTLED.

    12. Brenda on May 14th, 2008 4:19 pm

From those I know who’ve travelled to Burmuda, it is pretty safe. This incident is due to what we all know it is due to…not the “locals”.

I’m amazed at the headlines I’ve seen … the newspapers just copy right off the press releases from the cruise lines that this woman fell into the ocean.

In rough weather, is a responsible 46-year-old woman going to be “clowning around” by climbing up and down ship rails, etc.?

But hey, it can’t happen to me, right? Come on, honey, let’s go on a Caribbean cruise ….

    14. Jack from PA on May 14th, 2008 4:56 pm

Anyone who knew Jorge and Mindy would know that clowning around like this was well within Mindy’s persona and that Jorge would not be capable, both mentally and physically to have helped in anyway.
I have known both for about 4 yrs.and if I was told Mindy was walking on the rails, I would belive it. That was just the way she was. Yes she was a caring person and a sucessful nurse, but the gloves came off when she was on her down time.

    15. katablog on May 14th, 2008 5:03 pm

Sorry, women and men don’t fall off cruise ship balconies without a little help from their “friends”. AT 4′ 10″ it would be totally impossible to accidentally fall. Climbing around from balcony to balcony? I really doubt it. This and the George Smith case doesn’t pass the smell test.

    16. Susy Q on May 14th, 2008 8:14 pm

The case was featured on Nancy Grace this evening and it is being reported that there is security video of her falling overboard. The boyfriend was not with her at that time. There was earlier video of him entering the next door cabin (friends of the couple) maybe Greta will have something on her show.

mindy’s daughter goes to school with me in tabernacle, nj and i feel terrible for her. we have never liked each other but it’s such a hard thing for a 16 year old to go through

      #11- Miss-Under….I completely agree with your post….

What a shame that domestic violence once again appears to play into this…. As Mothers, we must educate all of our children (daughters especially) about how not to fall prey or stay in an abusive relationship.

      Very sad story…

    19. NM on May 15th, 2008 6:30 am

I believe her family. I think the bf had everything to do with her death.

This is from a local news radio
According to a written statement, the cruise line says that surveillance video shows Jordan was alone when she fell overboard. The statement says Jordan and her boyfriend Jorge Caputo dined at a restaurant on board the ship, returning to their stateroom at approximately 7:28 that evening. The cruise line says the video then shows 8 minutes later, Caputo left his stateroom to join friends in the stateroom next door, leaving Jordan alone. Then at 7:53, according to the cruise line, exterior surveillance cameras show Jordan falling overboard from her balcony. Shortly thereafter, the cruise line says, an emergency call was made from the friend’s stateroom and Caputo is seen exiting to seek help.

      http://www.kyw1060.com/Cruise-Ship-Video-Shows-NJ-Woman-Falling-Overboard/2187202

I wonder if he climbed the balcony back to their room and threatened her and that was her only way out.

    20. Mary, UK on May 15th, 2008 7:59 am

OTR stated that cctv was installed in the corridor and the outside of the ship, i think we should not jump the gun and wait till the FBI have viewed the tapes, whatever happened to “innocent until proven guilty”!!!!

    21. holly on May 15th, 2008 9:39 am

      this is freaking crazy
i was just on the same cruise like 2 weeks ago
      thats creepy
&& the boyfriend or whoever it was should be deeply investigatedddd

    22. A New Girl on May 15th, 2008 4:10 pm

@ Mary, UK—-Mary is right—Fox News was reporting last night that there is video footage of the missing girl alone in her room after bf left to go to friends cabin.

They are saying there may be footage of the victim actually attempting to climb over the balcony herself to get to adjoining balcony on a windy night, rougher seas, etc. The couple had apparently just returned from dinner. Alcohol induced? Anyway, we may have all jumped the gun on this one…could have been accidental afterall.

Still find it strange that your “significant other” falls overboard on a vacation cruise and you continue on your journey….what a loser.

    23. richard on May 16th, 2008 10:06 am

The videotapes (which may or may not have been altered) apparently show that she was alone when she fell. Why, then, did her boyfriend say that “we” were “clowning around”? And why is it that he seemed to be anything but concerned?

I’m keeping an open mind on this.

    24. fran on May 16th, 2008 4:26 pm

I’m keeping an open mind also. What bothers me is not just that they were in an abusive relationship, but that he’s had different versions of what happened that night.

      Doesn’t add up.

    25. Mary, UK on May 17th, 2008 2:29 am

I think we should wait till ANY “facts” are verified, the tape being altered is IMO a step too far, conspiracy theories do not exist every-where, i would like to hear proof rather than the families say so that this was an abusive relationship, police reports etc, also there could be a number of reasons that different stories have been told, on OTR Greta said that only one was told directly to the mother, so as we are only getting snippets LEAKED to the press maybe we should hang fire until the whole OFFICIAL account is released!!!

I was on the norwegian Dawn the day this accident occured. It was a very horrible and terrifying incident. I dont believe her husband had any part of the incident. I believe this was an unfortunate accident since she was a bit tipsy at the time it occured.

    28. TEARS on December 30th, 2008 7:47 am

Could this latest incident on a NOrwegian cruise ship be a copycat

    29. David Blackburne on November 10th, 2010 12:46 am

Is this cruise line serious? fell over on her own? They continue? She should have had “real friends’ because one of them helped her overboard! Dum asses
