Aruban Minister Booshi Wever Suing Diario, Freedom of the Press, Not in Aruba

In Aruba, words are more offensive than individuals actions …

It appears that once again an Aruban political official is suing Jossy Mansur and Diario for of defamation. Minister Candelario (Booshi) Wever is suing Diario claiming that his reputation was tarnished by statements made in Diario. So much for freedom of the press or free speech.

Press_freedom

The minister says that ‘desgraciado’ is one of the worst insults in Papiamento.  That word is translated as ‘unhappy’ in the Diccionario Avanza of Jossy M. Mansur (also director of Diario), but in the normal linguistic usage, the meaning is much stronger and very offensive.  The article also insinuates that the minister is the owner of a brothel in Venezuela and that Wever’s days are numbered and that he will feel the Colombian Community breathing down his neck.  That is actually the reason why the minister instituted the lawsuit to demand a rectification from Diario.

Is it any wonder why Aruban officials could not cope with the American press during the Natalee Holloway disappearance and investigation? These people are more worried about what is said about them than the actual facts that transpire during a story. Its not always the politicians, but the people themselves. Was there anything more heinous than Beth Holloway, the mother of missing Natalee Holloway having to apolgize to the Kalpoe’s for comments made when all signs pointed to the fact that they were some how involved at took part with her daughters disappearance.

Booshi Wever wants to see his name cleared (Amigoe: 5/10/2008)

ORANJESTAD — Minister Candelario (Booshi) Wever claimed damages in a lawsuit yesterday.  He did this because he says that his reputation is tarnished with the statements in an article in Diario.  He was called a desgraciado in that article that was published on April 15.

Apart from a rectification, Wever’s lawyer Anthony Ruiz of lawyers’ firm Croes, Tschong, and Wever demanded a penalty of 100.000 florins imposed on a daily basis in case of non-compliance, and 50.000 florins in damages.

Reason for the article is a nasty incident around the performance of the famous Colombian singer Alci Acosta in Aruba, which didn’t take place due to a provisional work permit that was denied.  Lawyer Milko Baiz of lawyers’ firm Gomez and Bikker told the judge that an Aruban radio station organized a spontaneous action afterwards to honour Acosta with a plaquette to express the Aruban Community’s appreciation for Acosta as artist.

Acosta did come to Aruba on the days of the concert, but not as an artist, but a tourist.  After he was presented with the plaquette in the presence of the public, he thanked the people by singing a few songs.  When he wanted to leave the next day, immigration refused to give him permission to leave Aruba.  He was forced to stay two more days in Aruba.  Baiz says the article must be considered as the anger expressed by the public.  “The Immigration Service confirmed to Diario on thapologizee phone that the order to keep Acosta longer in Aruba came from Minister Wever, which caused the sharp words in the article, but according to my client, whatever the paper said is part of the freedom of press.”

Wever denied in court yesterday that he had anything to do with the forced extended stay of Acosta.  He explained that the Immigration Service can take such measures in case of irregularities during a stay.  The performance of Acosta without a permit was investigated during the two days that the artist was forced to stay on the island.  The judge gives verdict on May 28.

So this guy Acosta sang two songs without a permit to do so … and in return, Aruba forced him to stay there two days? What was there for Aruba to investigate? What threat does the performance of a few songs, apparently without pay, present? What law is there against this?

No wonder Aruba said that our boycott protests were illegal … it simply didn’t like them.

If Aruba doesn’t like something, THAT makes it “illegal” in their eyes. And look how fast this case is supposed to be over … it seems the whole thing will be wrapped up in a month.

Come on, people of Aruba, why aren’t you speaking out? Don’t you realize that this sort of thing only smears your country even more?

More fodder for the boycott … more reason for us to despise you. And certainly, more reason to encourage people to say our slogan:

“No justice for Natalee, no tourists for Aruba.”

But it seems that there is never justice on Aruba.

    2. richard on May 12th, 2008 6:53 am

By the way, Wever, do you own a brothel in Venezuela or not? If not, you have the right to demand a retraction of that specific point … but perhaps it was said because it is true. If Jossy Mansur has the proof, then your presence in Aruba’s government says volumes about the place.

Colombians … join our boycott of Aruba.

    3. M Dabby on May 12th, 2008 7:55 am

Even if in the strict sense of the word “desgraciado” could mean unattractive and said of a person that inspires compassion, in the New Continent it is also a grave personal insult, since it connotes perversity and refers to someone of bad origins, a low-life, someone that is despised.

So yes, Jossy insulted the guy, which in turn is probably truly perverse, because he was intending to levy the singer, when there was no payment in sight.

I read Carlos Tromp’s open letter to Beth in the Forum. Klaas, could you put this letter on the FP? It certainly explains the silence of the people; we’ve seen all the “mysterious” deaths and suicides that have taken place, and the citizens are just plain scared. What a way to live. The Caribbean has the reputation for their dirty politics, the haves and have nots, but this sure brings it home to me. Monkeys, keep up the good work, I lurk a lot but keep up with what’s going on, and appreciate your efforts!

    5. richard on May 12th, 2008 12:09 pm

Please do post it here, moderator Klaasen. Perhaps this Mr. Tromp will have some ideas about Amy Bradley as well. We all should see this letter.

hear is nothing good against the americans…
in a future you cant even go nowhere on vacation

Ringo, go ahead and boycott all you want, use your inherent right to express yourself freely. Next time you go traveling, don’t visit the hole of the world. Try to visit something better. My best to Paul, George and Geert Wilders.

The sword of truth has split the belly of Aruba wide open for all the world to see. Peering into the bowels of their corrupt Government officials inept Polis, and lying Tourism officials is tantilizingly revealing……….in a word, each are PATHETIC. Embarrasing examples of inbred bottom rung laughing stocks.

The satisfying part of examining the reasons for their downfall is that no one had to do anything negative to Aruba….they have disgraced themselves by their own actions and hand.

      To Bob, and all.

The sword has split the belly of this creature Aruba. If one examines the stomach contents and the bowel one can tell what the creature feed on and a time-line can be established by the position of the contents in the intestines as it winds its way to a predictable end.

It is a foul job, it takes much courage. Dave Holloway has the courage and started the job. His sword was dulled and his will dented. He was discouraged from the nasty job by one who appeared to have wisdom, but was only part of the beast not wishing to have his stomach’s contents examined.

      Ringo,

Evil abounds. It’s everywhere. I know that, you know that. Difference between the U.S.A. and Aruba is, we round the evil blood letters up and hang them from them from the nearest tree. We will eventually get ahead of the game (if we don’t run out of rope).

Aruba, on the other hand, pats their criminals on the back and tells them what good boys they are. When the blood is knee-deep in the streets, maybe your country will do something. Don’t expect any of us to volunteer our life-blood to the rising red tide.

When the vampires roam the streets, it’s time to stay inside. It’s time for the vampire hunters to do their job, not cower behind locked doors, afraid they too may be thrown off the nearest roof top, crucified and burned, hung, or forced to commit suicide in a locked storage container.

You drink your rum and smoke your grass. You bury your head in the sand. But look out! You might pull your head from the sand and be missing body parts, or be unable to pull your curly locks form the sand because there are not enough parts left to do so.

You have one dangerous, dangerous island.

#28- Ken- Excuse me for my typographical error. I never professed to be an English Teacher, nor ever professed any hatred or malice towards the Island of Aruba or it’s citizens.

I have voiced my overall objections to the gross injustice(s) surrounding the Natalee Holloway case. The whole thing is BOGUS and wreaks of corruption.

As for your update on the “normalcy” on the Island— I have been there several times. Like anywhere, Aruba has it’s share of drugs, murder & various violent crimes. Glad you think that’s “normal” that an American Girl goes missing (gets dumped at Sea after she’s been drugged and taken sexual advantage of) , and the main perpetrator admits to his involvement in the crime (and then profits from it). On top of all that, the legal system in place allows the criminal(s) to remain free! (One of whom was a Judge-in-Training who helped the main perpetrator cover up his crime).

Sorry !!! But somehow- I don’t think that’s “normal”. Thanks for your input, however. All of which I might point out is completely IRRELEVANT- that’s spelled:

I am just pointing out that the “boycott” seems absurd. If that is being a troll, then I guess I am a troll.Yes Joran may have gottten off but he does not even live there anymore. Most people have forgotten about the case and unless Joran does something crazy like rob a bank or commit murder, then this case will remain under the radar. Most Americans will not think about this case before taking a vacation in Aruba.I was recently there and it seemed to be bustling with the hotel pretty full and the line to get beach towels was long. This site seems to be a big circle jerk where veryone agrees with each other.Kinda like FNC.

If it was Ken, they wouldn’t keep letting your posts through.

Joran doesn’t still live there… but his
      cell-phone smuggler… Paulus Vandersloot and
      the two Kalpoes still do.

I don’t let any of those lying, justice obstructing sobs “off da hookus” for one moment!

      They are dirty as sin!

Throwing a girl away in the sea in Aruba, not knowing if she is alive or dead seems absurd to me.

      You crack me up…

      Everything back to normal?

Is it NORMAL for a Minister

to buy drugs in foreign countries

and still have a couple hundred “G”s

Is it NORMAL for a Minister

What, exactly, does that tell us about you?

      .

      You’re a liar!

There is no normalsy in Aruba

and the visitors are not standing in line.

The Cruise visitors don’t even get off the ship,

Your logical way of thinking is quite amazing!

“..he does not even live there anymore”.

Do you really think, if a suspect/murder flees a country, it’s not anymore a suspect/murder or people will forget?
He is still supect #1 in a murder case!
His dirty face is well known over the whole world and people wont forget.
Wherever his name shows up, it will be connected with the Natalee Holloway case.
He can’t escape! The world is to small.

“…and the line to get beach towels was long”.

A very ‘powerfull statement’ about tourists and Hotel occupancy!
Specially when they only have a couple towels to be washed over and over again and the tourists have to wait until they are dry!

You better go now and buy some more properties in Aruba or invest your money in the “Beach-Towel-Business”.

Next time please try hard to use your gray cells, before posting anything.

One would think that the van der Sloots would be hated on Aruba. After all, they know the answers that we seek … they could provide them, which for some people would end the animosity towards Aruba (not in my eyes, given the corrupt government) … and doing so would ease the boycott.

Instead, as far as I know, there hasn’t even been a move towards censuring PvdScum for his proven lies and evasion of justice. Aren’t there supposed to be some ethical standards for lawyers?

Then again, what a mockery to talk about ethical standards on Aruba. So if they sink in the ocean, the only damage would be the polluted waters that would result. Boycott Aruba.

I have seen many people -included those I loved_ jump and get out of life.
I cannot speak in this case enough for Natalee.

But while I’m thinking overhere, I know one thing:
Are you searching for Natalee and wanna have the money?.. you know what I mean by every finding.
Or did you came… in that all hate I every time hear?
Or did you recognize something… for the rest of your live.

To think that we, or I, have come up with a new

I’m not here to sway your thinking

Ken is now the voice for most people and Most Americans. Most Americans will go to Aruba , they don’t care what happened to Natalee. Most people have forgotten Natalee Holloway lost her life in Aruba. Ken you are sounding more and more like the Ahata.. Read the headlines today, tourism still isn’t what it was pre Natalee Holloway and people are spending less on vacations. Kind of blows that myth of most people and most Americans dont care or forgot.

Maggie, Patti, Richard, Miss Katie,Carpe, et al:

I don’t post here much, but do read more than a few of the posts, almost daily. While I haven’t given up the hope that justice in this horrible case will prevail, I’m realistic enough to know that it may not.

The kens and the ringos of the world are here to discourage, disparage, to blow smoke. They are about as important and irrelevant on this site as whale flatulance. When they post, run for cover!

I’ve posted in the past about a co-worker who continued to visit Aruba every year. This past week, while I was in Cabo San Lucas, she and her mate made their 9th annual trip to Aruba. I asked how the trip went, and she volunteered that the place they stayed at was at 40% of capacity. She was happy not to have to wait in long lines for towels, and for my part, the 40% capacity number was music to my ears.

May the boycott of Aruba continue until justice for Natalee and the Holloway family is served!

I am with Vicki…I am tired of this whole fiasco..Rick Smid will make sure Natalee’s case will never come to be…and there is nothing we can really do about it….unfortunately…there are many things in this case that they could of been arrested for but non of that happened…and it never will…Oduber took Joran out of the limelight..and Rudy said he not welcome on the island…that is about how far this is every going to go…!!!

    78. waterboy (Jerry) on May 14th, 2008 6:07 pm

      Valero anyone?

I was talking with this guy today, and just making conversation. He told me earlier in the year, he had worked contract in Aruba for Valero http://valero.hrdpt.com/ He said he could only work 6 weeks out of the year, because of their labor laws. (I think he said 6 weeks. I’ll see him again next week, and I ask for sure.)

He knew about Natalee. I just pretended I was casually interested. He said, “you know, the girl those three bums killed. One of the boy’s dad is a lawyer.” He said there was a lot of talk about Natalee. He knew her name.

He said they worked in the sun all day, and at night they would go to a different restaurants to eat, since the company paid for everything. I ask him about the lighthouse restaurant, he said he wasn’t impressed.

I think I’ll ask him to take some photos for me if he goes back. I would like photos (possible a couple of hundred from the lighthouse, and pictures of all the graveyards, C&C (particularly the parking lot behind), and possible the Lion’s Den if he can find it. Can anyone give me any other ideas for photos.

He works like a dog, and the company (not Velaro) really takes advantage of him (unbelievable hours and lots of travel). He may not be with them too long.

He said that Valero bought the refinery about a year ago. Does anyone know anything about this? I know we talked about Valero several months ago, but I didn’t realize that they were on Aruba.

      Jerry

    80. Bob on May 14th, 2008 9:38 pm

here’s a little ditty that should place a smile of satisfaction on everyone’s face (provided Aruba Tourism decides to report truthful numbers for a change):

Tomorrow is May 15th. It is expected that tourism by Americans, based upon US Airline arrivals, and Hotel bookings of visitors having a US address in Q1, 2008…………..will be reported to show a continuing DOWNDRAFT of another 17% by visitors from North America, quarter over quarter.

This is a gut wrenching financial disaster by any standards. We believe a negligible increase of .35% by visitors from South America, and bare minimal increases from EU will also be reported.

      How embarrassing…….but justified.

Don’t get disheartened. The boycott continues. Beth does have a civil case going (where did all these subpoenas go that were supposed to be flying around, and how is that going?), Equusearch is going back for a look see, Joran is a virtual “man without a country”, no job, no education, and no hope. Aruba is being hammered financially, having strikes, etc. When Aruba or the Netherlands takes some sort of conclusive action against the Van der Sloot contingent and Kalpoes, then I’ll we willing to say RIP Natalee.

your so right I have thought the same…
Joran has no job no skills no education…. he is living off of his parents…..
      how long can that last…
his mind is not on education…..
rather on… pimping and gambling and drugging
you would think that by now his parents would be getting a little fed up with having to finance his life style
not to mention his rebellious attitude…..

they created that monster.. they can live with it…
      and my next comment is…
is aruba tired of the boycott that was the result of pauulus and jorans doings!!!

how long will they continue their support for them….there son will spend his life going from country to country.. to avoid being held responsible for natalees murder………………

As i posted on GRETAWIRE, I think it a good idea that from the third anniversary she should have posted on screen “1095 days the State Department ignore Natalee”, I can tell you that if Natalee was a fellow countryman of mine i would be incandescent with rage at the situation and the complete silence from the government departments that we would presume would have an interest.

I can tell you that although i am a Brit i am “incandescent with rage”, as a fellow human-being,woman,mother,sister and friend!!!!

    87. kaye on May 21st, 2008 12:41 pm

#86 mary……i agree that there should be some sort of 3-yr anniversary story but i don’t see that happening here in the US. i wrote to and emailed every large TV network, every prime time show host(i.e. greta, o’reilly, larry king, nancy grace, GMA, 48 hrs, dateline, etc) in this country and the BBC asking for a 3-yr anniversary story showing how aruba has done NOTHING in three years to bring closure for the holloways. to this date i have heard nothing.
it’s not important to them anymore as it won’t bring their ratings up. i’m not saying that individual persons don’t care anymore, i’m sure there are some who do, but large corporations don’t give a rats butt about this case.no money in it for them. even our own government here in the US has shown no interest in solving the case. they turned their back on beth/dave/natalee. very sad.
