I understand that this caption contest is intended to keep the motor of the pro-justice spirit running, but it is truly a mistake, more so after openly repudiating the performance art installed recently in the Rotterdam Museum.
Had the graphic exclusively included an untrue image intentionally representing v/d Sloot, the “creative” comments could be considered pro-Natalee and anti-Joran, because the focus of the mocking comments would have been the prime suspect. But having also the image of the young girl is an open invitation for comments that are offensive to the victim. It presents the essence of the Natalee Holloway case as having the least degree of importance, given that she is portrayed as an imaginative creation that represents pretense.
Making comments like the following is perceived as permissible because the intention is fun and game, but the comments are offensive to the memory of the victim, given that the fun comes at her expense and that they reinforce the idea that she was dumb enough to say yes to any of the obviously dangerous proposals and, therefore, whatever happened is her fault:

Although I am most appreciative of this website and all that it has done for the Holloway family and for Natalee’s cause, I must say that this caption contest is in bad taste. My daughter is the same age as Natalee Holloway, and I remember sending her off to the beach on her spring break and saying, “Be careful because a girl just went missing the other day in Aruba.” I’ve been on this website every day since.
I always imagine how things seem from Beth’s point of view and, although impossible, I don’t think I’d feel very good if I were her and saw this.

Frankenstein was a benign monster, and in a way, a victim. That’s not the parallel to draw in this case. The kid that this mocks could not care less about Natalee, but he is cringing because he got caught running his mouth and the basic truth is out. This website has been comforting to many because it’s the place we come to remember Natalee’s fate and see the efforts of her family and others to keep the case in the public eye and find Natalee. I’m disappointed in this caption contest, it’s not dignified. It’s important to maintain Natalee’s dignity. It also occurs to me, that in this movie, the monster does not harm the little girl.

I’m trying to sort out the article in my broken Dutch, and this is what I get for major points.
Attorney Moszkowicz will try to sue Joran for causing the mother (Beth) pain and suffering by admitting to Patrick that he was repsonsible for the disappearance although he hid that fact from the Aruban authorities.
The last paragraph is very interesting.
Attorney Moszkowicz wonders why Joran is still out of jail. Attorney Moszkowicz considers Joran’s ‘spilling his guts’ to Patrick a confession even though the Dutch justice officials don’t.
There are words that have a lot of connotation in the vernacular, such as ‘ontboezemingen’, so it seems that the attorney is not pulling any punches in his statements.
Someone who speaks Dutch should try to translate the gist of this article. This looks like a good development.

Humor, sarcasm and wit sometimes more drive home the point than any long article ever could. It plays on the very obsudity of what has and continues to go on in Aruba.
The caption contests are supposed to take on real issues, not fluff. Even in Sunday comics you will see references in commics to real life important situations if one looks close enough.

Speaking of fairy tales…any one of you ever read the UNedited version of many of the Grimm tales? They are sort of morbid, but make the story BETTER! For instance, in Sleeping Beauty, it ain’t a kiss that the prince gives her (hint..what when on was a bit “lower” on the body). Of course, that cannot go to a rated-G movie, so we have the kiss instead.
The point is that Frankenstein was supposed to have been “created” by his “father” and was basically a monster that could not be controlled by anyone other than “father”…unless you have a better description. “Father” also wanted to protect his little creation. See the similarity there?

It’s one thing to say that you don’t appreciate satirical humour when it’s in regards to a human tragedy but to suggest that readers may be mislead into believing that the authors of the posts are putting blame on the victim is a little off the wall.
First of all, the picture being parodied is of a MONSTER and an INNOCENT LITTLE GIRL. I think it’s reasonable to assume that the first thought that comes to the minds of the VAST MAJORITY of adults and children upon seeing that picture, is fear for the life of the little girl. The purpose of this thread was satire. “satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an often quite angry attack on something the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit.”
I would suggest that people offended by this thread look up the word ‘satire’.
I don’t want to enter the debate on this picture … but it’s worth noting that there are some parallel concerns to those that were expressed in the debate about the Dutch art piece. If nothing else, this proves that people do indeed react strongly to what they see!
We remember, too, that Dr. Victor Frankenstein was the CREATOR of the monster. I don’t think that, in the original book, the monster itself had any name.
The Dutch art exhibit was a spoof on the mentality of society. It was designed to make fun of the people who believe Joran Van Der Sloot is guilty and want him to be held accountable for his crimes. It was an attempt at satire by “artists” that don’t follow or understand the case.
The picture of the monster with the little girl was used as satirical humor by a website whose members have been following the Holloway case for a very long time. SM has an impressive collection of police statements, interviews, book quotes, translations, theories…etc., that back the opinions expressed on this site and thread. On the other hand, the opinion expressed through the Dutch exhibit was baseless. I think the art exhibit and this thread are apples and oranges.

I want to add to your point. I see your point (as you did make one), but there are so many similarities within the picture AND what you said about the “vast majority” of people fearing for the little girl.
1) Natalee’s friends DID fear for her and warned in vain that she not go with strangers.
2) Natalee, like the girl in the picture, was in the company of a monster and knew not…too innocent.
3) Joranstein held out that “flower” to lure her away.
4) Fact the pic is by the water’s edge is too freaky!

Hi Brenda, the similarities between the picture and the Holloway case is what makes it a good picture to use as a satirical ‘caption contest’. My point that I was trying to make in the post that you’re referring to, was to Gloria (post 87)who felt that people reading this thread would think that we were actually blaming Natalee for what happened to her.
There was a bad monster name Joran V.D. you may have seen him on national t.v. he met a young girl…ill just call her Nate, he liquored her up, and took her out late…Then something bad happened, when they sat near the shore, Joran, you see, was bad to the core…But the Monkeys online will not give him peace, till the girl is avenged and hes in the grease…..
My take on this parody was that Frankenstein being Joran as to how he lured all the girls.
If some felt there was any disrespect to Natalee, well that is an opinion that I respect, however, my disrespect if fully intended for Joran and NOT Natalee.

I didn’t understand it at first either, it upset me to see how trusting that girl is and how a monster is a monster even while smiling and bearing treats. Some treats are not worth the evil that is attached to them.
If I got it right, the cartoon is not supposed to give us good feelings, but like a good picture, paints a thousand words. The whole initial crime and sloppy cover up is sick, not the cartoon.
If you only had 10 seconds to get your point across about this case, what would it be? The picture with a smart caption would cause people to search for more information, imo.

SL-Gloria – #88, thanks for that. I think you nailed it. Red: Satire, yeah we get it. Most folks put their little caption on and it met the satire criteria. There were just a few folks, the ones doing the most yip yapping that just went plain old downright ugly, and obscene. Once the submit key is hit, it’s too late to grow some monkey brains or class. Give a victim a break.
For a good definition of class, refer to Dave Holloway’s comments after seeing the De Vries tapes. His dignity and poise was amazing. Natalee was a lucky girl to have the parents she had. Give them a break too.

We have been covering cases for years and I think we know better than you what it takes to be serious, be light hearted and then cut to the bone with cartoons that mean much more than their face value. Of course one would have to have the ability to think beyond what they visually see.
Don’t be mad that we have been a thorn in the side of Aruba for years now. SM and the case are going no where. In fact … the best is yet to come … don’t blink you may miss something.

I have no doubt Beth, Dave, Steve, and the rest of Natalee’s family actively monitors this site. As I mentioned earlier, if any one of them voiced concern over the content of a story or picture, THEY would say so and I believe SM would pull it.

When you write a caption for the illustration above, if the resulting inference presents the victim -Natalee Holloway- as the folly, then the Scared Monkeys community is staging a burlesque of the situations which caused her loss, and unknowingly or not, is having fun because of her loss.
The type of humor that is being promoted through the image of the young girl and the “monster”, which is meant to be ironic, sarcastic and/or satirical, by default, has the purpose of exposing a “human vice or stupidity”. If the captions insinuate that young girl fell for the temptation of a promise of pleasure or reward made by the monster, who are we laughing at, the monster or the girl?

I must disagree with you.
Most of us view the picture as it was meant to be viewed…the little girl being TOTALLY innocent. So innocent in fact she does not even understand the monster is a dangerous creature. The fact you would see it otherwise is something I find more troublesome.
Look at it this way. If a young child had never seen a wasp and had never been told to be careful of one…then captured one in their little hands…need I explain to you the outcome?
