Art … Or Just Plain WRONG? “Scratch n’ Sniff” Virgin Mary

Can you just say WRONG! However, in the end it is not us who judges you.Virgin Mary

There is offensive and then there is offensive. If one ever wanted to know what gets one a sure fire one way ticket to HELL, creating “scratch and sniff” on the breasts of a likeness of the Virgin Mary just might do it. Last Spring it was Chocolate Jesus and now its “scratch n’ sniff” Virgin Mary. Cosimo Cavallaro, the Canadian-born artist claims he is not being sensational.

Could anyone imagine if this so-called artist ever did “scratch ‘n sniff” Mohammad? How many buildings in cities across the world would be burned to the ground and people killed? Let alone the the fatwa on his head. But its OK to go after Christianity.

”It sounds pretty sick to me,” said John Horvat, a spokesman for the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property. “Obviously this man has an agenda. He’s targeting very revered religious figures.”

The gallery director said critics misunderstood the artist’s intentions.

“I see it as basically a show about healing,” Ronald Sosinski said. “The sculptures are extremely traditional when you see them in their use of material. When you first see them they look like bronzes.” (News Day)

Get a load of what this “artist” and attention whore does find offensive.

“Depictions of Jesus in plastic or wood are what I find offensive,” he said. “With my work, you don’t want it to melt, so you have to be more aware of the time you have with it. It’s more alive.”

Some ppl who call themselves artists will do anything for the shock value to rouse ppl.

True artists do not have to do the kind of crap we see here to get the attention needed for ppl to view their art.

I call artbage. Right in the trash …

Vision pollution, can’t they be cited by the EPA?

Although I’m not Catholic, I am Christian and don’t like this at all. Every religious icon deserves a degree of respect no matter what your personal beliefs. On the other hand, I don’t think Catholics or Christians in general will start calling for bombings and killing as a result of this. I certainly hope not.

Personally I believe that the artwork makes an important point in that what he is doing is done to an IMAGE. I believe sometimes we are too quick to worship or revere images that we lose sight of the actual entity, causing us to treasure the visual more than what it represents. It is a bit crass, but let’s put things into perspective. It’s not like he is putting scratch-n-sniff on the actual breasts of the Virgin Mary. :)

      Also

Same can be said for the chocolate Jesus. The artist is right about it being temporary, it is only a representation, just like Michelangelo’s ‘Pieta’ and other famous artwork depicting Jesus. Jesus is not the sculpture or the painting. He IS. Whether or not this was the artist’s intention, to comment on how much value we place on images (which can be seen as idols- check the second commandment), it is all about interpretation. This is the way I view his work.
