Mystery at Sea Aboard The Joe Cool: Kirby Archer and Guillermo Zarabozo Arrested … Crew Missing

A bizarre twist in the story of the mystery at sea where two men, Kirby Archer and Guillermo Zarabozo were just recently rescued from a life raft near an abandoned charter boat 30 miles off the Cuban coast. Archer and Zarabozo have now been arrested by authorities and  charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and making a false statement to a federal agent.

Archer’s charges stem from a January theft of more than $90,000 from a Wal-Mart in his home state of Arkansas. Both are being held in the federal detention Center in Miami pending a court appearance today.

The charges are initial clues in a case involving an empty boat adrift on a lonely sea, its crew inexplicably missing. Adding to the enigma were the two survivors found in the raft.

The crew of the chartered boat “Joe Cool” are still missing. The ex-wife of Archer ads even more intrigue to a story that already continues too much mystery.

The four-member crew of the charter boat Joe Cool is still missing, two days after the U.S. Coast Guard found the charter vessel in the Florida Straits, about 40 miles north of Cuba.

Relatives of the crew members fear they were forced to abandon the vessel.

Thanks for covering this Scared Monkeys.

We’ve been following it locally since Sunday evening when the family first reported that the boat did not come home as scheduled.

The 4 crew are locals — the 3 guys have been boating and fishing and working with boats and fisherman since they were kids.

I pray for the families and loved ones of the crew. Especially the 2 little babies who’s Mom and Dad did not return.

The family is are trying to hold onto hope since no bodies have been recovered (and have initiated their own search efforts). But they know the odds. :-( ((((

Sharon…Patti often plays the troll. Ignore her.

I am orignally from Tampa and read TBO online every day. I am sooooo sorry for that family. I am sure they were tossed overboard and I read in the Miami Herald the family already believes this.

I also read today that the scum bag is wanted in another state to be looked at for child molestation charges. I thought that may be the case the with young boy he “took an interest in”. No doubt he took the money from Wal-mart with full intention of fleeing to Cuba with the kid. I am (again) so sorry for that family who obviously lost their loved ones.

Why on earth they didn’t continue on to Cuba in that boat…I have no earthly idea other than they didn’t know how to get there.

One theory I have is that while they were trying to put the crew overboard one of the crew members somehow managed to get hold of that cash and toss is into the sea. At that point, the criminals were screwed and attempted to make their crime appear as they were also victims.

      Hi Brenda —

In a nutshell — boat ran out of gas, Probably a big reason it never made it to Cuba.

Someone also dropped anchor in water that was too deep. Don’t know who or why — but I’m guessing the ‘customrs’ did not know how to operate the boat.

Coast guard called off searches last night.

Family is still searching privately. Hoping that the crew was thrown overboard without being killed first. Hoping they drifted to one of the ‘cays’ and are awaiting rescue. Family knows that it is a shot in the dark.

Waiting for forensics results. Blood found on boat. I heard ‘bow’. Today I heard ‘stern’.

There is nothing checking out with the 2 in custody — including no girlfriends waiting for them on Bimini. Surprise??

They said 2 hijackers boarded the boat (from where? for what?)So 2 hijackers with one gun can overtake a boat with 4 experienced crew and 2 passengers?? I doubt it — unless they had AK47′s instead of a pistol. I’m be fairly confident that the charter boat was ‘armed’ to some degree.

My heart breaks for the family of the crew. You grew up in Tampa — so you know what I am talking about when I say that these guys were baitng hooks and driving boats since they were old enough to walk.

If I hear any meaningful updates I will post them.

I would like to take the 2 in custody for a nice airboat ride in the Everglades. So that they can swim with the alligators.

Kirby ARCHER brought evil to those he touched in marriage and in everyday contacts. While I believe everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the record and pattern of ARCHER makes it clear that he is a sociopath at best. It would appear the US Army failed him and society by not following through with their investigation into child molestation at Fort Sill, choosing to discharge him for being AWOL than the potential embarrassment of a Military Police Investigator being labeled a child molester. This in a time of war when Military Police are critically needed in Iraq and Afghanistan! The Independence County and or Batesville Police Department failed him by failing to follow through with their child molestation investigation and get the word out to the public of the danger he poses! And lastly his parents failed him by failing to recognize the danger signs – they were even unaware of his first marriage until his second marriage was in trouble! The system that failed to identify and protect society from ARCHER needs help. Now four South Florida folks who loved life payed the price. -Mako-

Feds tag ‘survivors’ of boating mystery as murder suspects
Bullet evidence link suspects to Joe Cool shooting, say prosecuters

MIAMI – Federal prosecutors for the first time said Tuesday that two survivors found near an abandoned Miami Beach fishing boat are suspects in the deaths of the vessel’s captain and three-member crew.

“They are presently under investigation for murder,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gilfarb said of Kirby Archer, 35, of Arkansas, and Guillermo Zarabozo, 19, of Hialeah.

Gilfarb told U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff that investigators have uncovered evidence connecting Archer and Zarabozo to the Sept. 22 deaths at sea of the captain of the Joe Cool, Jake Branam, 27; his wife, Kelley, 30; his half brother, Scott Gamble, 36; and crewman Samuel Kairy, 27. The four have been missing and presumed dead since Archer and Zarabozo chartered the Joe Cool for a one-way trip to Bimini.
