Kill The Baby Polar Bear Says Animal Rights Activists

Baby_polar_bear

Yep, you read the headline correctly.

Animal rights activists are actively campaigning for a baby polar bear, named Knut, to be euthanized because it is being raised by humans after it’s mother abandoned him. The polar bear is 3 months old and has been hand fed by the zookeepers at the Berlin Zoo.

When Knut was born in December, his mother ignored him and his brother, who died. Zoo officials intervened, choosing to raise the cub themselves. But Albrecht and other activists fret that it is inappropriate for a predator, known for its fierceness and ability to fend for itself in the wild, to be snuggled, bottle-fed and made into a commodity by zookeepers.

They argue that current treatment of the cub is inhumane and could cause him future difficulties interacting with fellow polar bears. “They cannot domesticate a wild animal,” added Ruediger Schmiedel, head of the Foundation for Bears. The charity cites a similar case of a baby sloth which was put to sleep after being abandoned by its mother last December in the Leipzig city zoo.

But Berlin Zoo holds different opinions. Its chief vet Andre Schuele says the activists’ criticisms would make him angry if he could take them seriously. “Polar bears live alone in the wild. I see no logical reason why this bear should be killed.” via the Daily Mail

The animal rights lobby has gotten so out of hand that they now think they are God and want to control the order of life on their terms. It is amazing what these people will think and do.

Of course it’s cute but it’s not a toy to be played with. It is a wild animal. I don’t believe in zoos, they are really jails. So I agree better to be dead than to have a life sentence in jail for no reason.

WTF,It is an animal ,under our care.We should take care of it..

I think that some ppl really need to get a life.

If this same polar bear was stranded on an ice cap somewhere what would the same ppl be screaming?

So much for the boy who was raised by wolves, I guess the boy should have been put to sleep, huh?

    4. Observer on March 20th, 2007 3:48 pm

No Animal should ever be put to death unless they are already sick and dying.

I’ve seen a polar bear at the zoo and he was having a blast swimming around in his pool. Almost likehe knew he was being watched so he’d play more. Jumping from his cliff’s in the pool. The keepers would make him huge ice cubes in barrels then drop them in his pool to bat around and play with. He looked happy and would entertain the kids all day. If the zoo is nice and they have clean, big habitats for the animals it’s fine. It’s the small, dirty rinky dinky zoos that are not good.

You need to translate the whole story guys and not just your own interpretations, which lets face it would be:
Kill the Animal rights activists, the anti war protesters, the people who were protesting against the Iraq war at the weekend.
Here is the real story, translate it properly if you will:
      https://ssl.sueddeutsche.de/panorama/artikel/386/106280/

By the way the Sueddeutschezeitung, is quite conservative and very well respected throughout the world.

Nobody in Germany especially the (god forbid) animal rights activists are running around saying “kill the baby polar bear”, what Mr Wolfram said was the following, that he has lived through 2 such situations where such animals were raised by their keepers and once such an animal is fully grown, there must be a physical barrier (a poar bear is capable of killing) like a fence meaning every time the keeper leaves after feeding the animal then it will die a little death of its own. He is also not saying “kill it”, he is just trying to put the situation into perspective.
Anyway I have scourged the newspapers and the blogs and I find zero “animal rights activists” saying “kill the baby polar bear”.
What on earth has happened to this blog, its now just anti anti war , anti anti climate disaster, I guess anti “old Europe”.
Pro Bush of course, but why ? tell me, what on earth was the good idea behind invading Iraq ? Can you honestly say that Bush or any other republican gives a real damn about any “rag head” in Iraq ?
I mean millions of them are being killed in Africa, the numbers are 10s and 100s times as many, however nobody is doing a damn thing about Sumatra for instance.
Are you all so bloody brainless and naive to believe that Bush gave or gives a damn about the Shi’ite people who in general have more backing from Iran than the Sunni’s who
(because Saddam was one) are supposed to be the bad guys?
It was a “lets show the world not to mess with the US” plus, “lets secure our oil for the immediate future” which has gone wrong.
Its time the US stood back and took a look at why their politics are not only hated by religious fanatics in the middle east.

Knut is a real cutie now. What’s wrong with having him in a zoo to educate us as he grows up.

    10. LilPuma on March 20th, 2007 6:37 pm

Take care of the baby polar bear. Treat him well and make sure he has a good life. There are good zoos and bad zoos. The good ones try to teach and get people interested in the well being of wild animals and the environment. They have enrichment programs so the animals don’t get bored and complacent. It’s not an ideal situation for wild animals, but the world isn’t a perfect place. Kudos to those who take orphaned animals for this purpose.

    11. ConservativeAnimalRightsActivistq on March 20th, 2007 7:19 pm

Have any of you tried Googling “Foundation For Bears” or the name of this supposed animal rights activist, “Frank Albrecht”, who is quoted in the articles about Knut?

Nothing comes up except links to the Daily Mail article and other articles about Knut.

There isn’t even a Web site for this supposed “Foundation For Bears” group.

Either this Frank guy is a single nutjob pretending he’s part of a larger group, or someone is trying to make Animal Rights activists look bad.

I don’t know of any animal rights activist or group who would say Knut should be euthanized. That’s just stupid.

    12. polarbearslovejesus on March 20th, 2007 10:45 pm

if the news story gives wingnuts a chance to make a dig at animal rights activists, sure, they’ll champion the rights of a polar bear.

too bad animal rights activists weren’t serving as guards at abu ghraib. maybe then repugnuts would give a crap about iraqi people being tortured.

    13. Skyboxx on March 21st, 2007 6:10 am

What do you expect? Since Roe v Wade, the left believes “IT” can decide who(m) lives and who dies.
      Here is what they believe….

Whales – Save the whales NO MATTER WHAT
Babies – Okay to abort on demand
Terry Shiavo and other infirm, pull the plug,
      Polar Bears – kill ‘em
Sex Offenders – Rehab, catch and release
Death Penalty – they believe is wrong????????

Their message is they want to control who lives and who dies.
Hitler and his machine was much the same in WW2. They decided who lived and who died. If we don’t learn from history we are bound to repeat it. Hitler wanted a master race and now the extreme left is trying for their own “master race” by determining who should live and whom should die. Wake up America or lose your freedoms. Today a bear, tomorrow a monkey?? the next day a scared monkey?, the day after that, maybe it could be you………..

    14. Skyboxx on March 21st, 2007 6:35 am

Remember the left and unfortunately, the Democratic party which the LEFT now controls, is about CONTROL. They mask it in the idea of rights for all, but its really about control.

They want to control your education – WE decide if public education is right and no vouchers for private education (becauuse they can’t control what will be taught)

They control populaton – abortion on demand, euthanazia, no death penatly even for the harshish of evil criminals, they want to keep whom they want alive.

They cntrol your whether or not to own guns. They want to take them away period. (Most dictators do this when they want complete control, eliminate an uprising)

They want to control your charities. They will tell you whom to give and how to collect, United giving is their motto. They don’t believe in individual giving or faith based initiatives

They want to control your spending, we will tax your and tell you how much we want to give you back in governement services

They control you by saying, we know whats best and will put a government oversigt committe on the project and tell you how to buy, sell, think, etc They believe in big government, and small voices of the people… in their minds only they have the answers…

They want the day off for Christmas, but won’t let you say the words “Merry Christmas”

    15. Richard on March 21st, 2007 7:45 am

I’m told that the Singapore Zoo, which is supposed to be one of the world’s most advanced (I didn’t go, so don’t know), lets the animals roam around free and keeps the people in vehicles so they can see the animals in their natural habitats. Fascinating idea … but the Singapore climate is the last thing you’d want for a polar bear.

Anyways, he’s cute, politically incorrect though it may be.

IF this group is indeed making such a call, it shows the triumph of ideology over common sense and basic decency.

Who are they to demand that an animal be killed because it isn’t being raised as they think proper? That’s like the people who decry “cultural imperialism” because they want to keep the “natives” in what they think is their proper mode of living.

This has brought it home to me certain truths about Animal rights groups. My wife and I support 2 such groups. We will be cancelling our donations on the back of comments made by one of the groups on killing this Polar Bear cub. In my opinion they are expressing a polical style cart blanch view instead of considering animals as individuals. Therefore I will not be giving any more money to animal rights – which is a shame. Instead I am going to make a donation to the zoo that rescued the cub. I hope others do the same – it might make these animal rights people start to consider the rights of individual animals.

      KUDO’s to # 5 and # 16!! Save the bear, period!

    18. Wicky on March 21st, 2007 10:59 am

Who are they to say what is right and wrong? Kill an innocent bear, just because they won’t be able to live in the wild??He’s was born in a zoo anyhow, not like he’s in the wild. Maybe the people wanting this poor bear put down should be put down, after all, how do we know there parents raised them right to be able to function in society? I say leave the bear alone.

    19. Kantorka on March 22nd, 2007 5:56 am

This has been twisted to the bizarre by the Yellow Press. Noone really, and seriously, has demanded the killing of Knut. No matter what Bild says about this matter (and what several other news services in print and online copy from them.)
An objective press covering would, of course, not have produced heart wrenching covers like this: “Baby polar bear killed by lethal injection” *sob*
What did happen was more or less this: the cub is being raised by hand by the zoo personel, as have been a lot of animals in that and every other zoo without quite as much press coverage – well,he is cute! Of course there was a media hype.
Zoos live of small media hypes around their newborn, honestly said. A friend of us was a zoo director for all his professional life and told us that zoos around the world live of the cutesy factor from time to time even if they don’t know wether there will be room for the grown up animal. Baby seals are cute, but twenty grown up seals in one bassin don’t work. So, those zoos -around the world- show off baby seals – and kill the grown ups when setting them free is no option and no other zoo will take them.

That is what happens, and that is what this animal rights activist wanted to discuss. Weeks back he published a comment, that accused the zoo “business” of hypocrisy when it comes to raising cute baby animals by hand. He did add that keeping the animal species appropiate, which zoos claim to try, would have meant letting him die.

Poisonous injections have never been mentioned. Until, that is, weeks later (!) the Bild picked up the statement and made up (which is the correct term here) the story which is now, seemingly, making it around the world.

Now, you can discuss a lot about what animal rights activists claim and demand, but this poor guy, and a few like minded people, is experiencing some undeserved media attention right now.

    21. chloe on March 23rd, 2007 10:50 pm

I hate to see the cub die, but for him to live forever in a glorified cage is far more inhumane. Life in a zoo is no life at all. He might have a few hundred square feet to roam for the rest of his life, if he’s lucky.

    22. honey bunny on June 3rd, 2008 3:08 pm

killing the inneocent animal by far is not the right thing to do. i believe jails are sad, and i would not want to live there, but why does it deserve to die? because i really believe it dosn’t. and why does it matter if its cuddled with or not? it dosnt need to fend for itself when its living in its cage for its whole life.

    23. Erl on November 22nd, 2008 8:27 pm

I was asked the question before replying “What is the sum of 7 and 1?” Well the answer to that appears to be about the IQ of you animal rights folks. Get a job and do something useful!

    24. Jess on March 24th, 2009 3:36 pm

The animal rights activists are sooo right, so many adult animals are killed because they’re not cute enough. Yet zoos get headlines like, “Zoo keepers save baby polar bear after mother abandons it” (most likely the mother would not have abandoned it if it was not in captivity, it has no way of knowing how to care for it!) but animal rights activists get headlines like “animal rights activists try to kill baby polar bear” now, is that fair?

Polar Bears on Thin Ice, Not Really!

      http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba551

A new NCPA study by Dr. David Legates, director of the University of Delaware’s Center for Climatic Research and state climatologist, examines the claim that global warming threatens to cause polar bear extinction and finds little basis for fear. By and large, the study finds that polar bear populations are in good shape.

Is the Arctic Warming? In the study, Climate Science: Climate Change and Its Impacts , Legates reviewed the claims that global warming is causing an unnatural increase in Arctic temperatures, posing a threat to the thickness and extent of sea ice and thus to the polar bears who rely upon it. In particular, he examined assertions made in the 2004 Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (hereafter, the Arctic Assessment ), an international project of the Arctic Council and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC).

Legates finds that their claims of an impending, human-induced Arctic meltdown are not supported by the evidence. For example, the Arctic Assessment proclaimed that Arctic air temperature trends provide an early and strong indication that global warming is causing polar ice caps and glaciers to melt. However, current research suggests that coastal stations in Greenland are instead experiencing a cooling trend, and average summer air temperatures at the summit of the Greenland Ice Sheet have decreased at the rate of 4°F per decade since measurements began in 1987.

Conclusion. Are human activities causing a warming in the Arctic, affecting the sea ice extent, longevity and thickness? Contradictory data exists. What seems clear is that polar bears have survived for thousands of years, including both colder and warmer periods. There may be threats to the future survival of the polar bear, but global warming is not primary among them.

    44. jenny on May 2nd, 2010 2:38 pm

I think these animal rights people are horrible. he is a baby!!! He lives in a zoo so it never has to be able to survive in the wild!!! Just because it was raised by humans doesn’t mean you should kill him!!! Besides, if polar bears live by themselves, what does it matter if he can interact with other polar bears or not. I am all for animal rights, but this animal has a right to live!!! :(

    45. MICA RICHARDSON on May 21st, 2010 8:16 am

AS LONG AS THE BEAR ISNT SICK IT SHOULD NEVER BE PUT DOWN THERE ARE PLENTY OF POLAR BEARS IN CAPTIVITY AND THEY ARE WELL LOOKED AFTER WHY SHOULD THIS BE ANY DIFFERENT, GOOD GOD ALL THESE ANIMAL RIGHT PEOPLE AVE GOTTA DO IS SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE ABJECT ND SEE HOW THEY FEEL THEN!!!!!

    46. Miss Unnamed on May 25th, 2010 7:39 pm

Perhaps all people in excitense should die, so that animals can survive without being interrupted by the hatred and selfishness of the human race. Then dick heads like the animal rights activist would not even have a say in whether or not a baby polar bear should needlessly be murdered.

    47. Bridget on August 23rd, 2010 7:21 pm

I can’t believe that Animal activists want to kill Knut the Polar Bear just because it is being raised by Humans. The Mother abandoned him so, what else are you supposed to do ???
