This is Healthy … For Arubans and Tourist Alike, Illegal Dump Moko Burning

I guess one would say that there is no EPA on the island of Aruba. A burning illegal dump Aruba_Dump_Mokoburning beneath the surface could not be extinguished. What a pleasant thought the ground is burning and even more pleasant smell for those in the vicinity. The ATAHA claims they are concerned about the litter, really? Aruba knows of its illegal dumps but does nothing about it. Seems to be a running theme.

On Monday morning the environmental police wasn’t even aware of problems on Moko.

They praise their white sandy beaches, but have no explanation for their #98 ranking on the National Geographic list of cleanest countries in the world.

Just what the neighbours were afraid of, the fire that started in the 20 meters deep pit of waste cannot be extinguished.  The fire department and the police cannot do anything other than monitor the fire.  They advised the owner on Saturday to take measures.  The stench and smoke is unbearable for the neighbours.  Several of them have already been evacuated to family or friends.

On Friday evening around sunset, the fire department received reporting that there was fire on the illegal dump Moko.  At that time, the fire department could already smell that something was smoldering.  The fire caused considerable smoke developments and due to the hard wind, the fire could be smelled in big parts of Noord. (Amigoe)

Does it ever dawn on anyone in Aruba the contaminants that they put into the air or is it simply and out of sight out of mind situation as the wind blows the problem away? Even on a selfish and capitalistic approach, does the ATA ever give it a second thought about how air quality could be affecting tourism? How about the illegal dumping into the ground? Does anyone in Aruba care what they are doing to their own island? With the Valero oil refinery on one part of the island and illegal dumps burning at others, must make for a nice and healthy vacation.

The situation was worse on Sunday.  Several neighbours that could no longer stand the smell went elsewhere; away from the smoke.

Remember what Muller, former director of the Portuguese Service for Tourism, told Jan van Nes, chairman of the ATSA prior to the Queens visit last November.

“that compared with his last visit to Aruba, the island is quite filthy”.

Much like when Rome burned, Nero sat by an watched. In this case as the illegal dump burned, ATCO continued to dump.

While the illegal dump is heavily shouldering, Atco is dumping.  The fire department told the owner to cover the fire with sand, but according to the neighbours, Atco was carrying very flammable pallet residue.

Surprisingly, instead of bringing sand, Atco came with three trucks full of pallet residue.  The drivers were ordered by their boss to empty the trucks.  They didn’t know more. Atco was not available for comments on Monday morning.

Amigoe, February 6, 2007:  Illegal dump Moko is burning since Friday morning

While the illegal dump is heavily smouldering, Atco is dumping.  The fire department told the owner to cover the fire with sand, but according to the neighbours, Atco was carrying very flammable pallet residue.

ORANJESTAD – Just what the neighbours were afraid of, the fire that started in the 20 meters deep pit of waste cannot be extinguished.  The fire department and the police cannot do anything other than monitor the fire.  They advised the owner on Saturday to take measures.  The stench and smoke is unbearable for the neighbours.  Several of them have already been evacuated to family or friends.

On Friday evening around sunset, the fire department received reporting that there was fire on the illegal dump Monk.  At that time, the fire department could already smell that something was smouldering.  The fire caused considerable smoke developments and due to the hard wind, the fire could be smelled in big parts of Noord.

It was already too dark when the fire department reached the site on Friday evening.  The fire could have been extinguished with a whole lot of water, but because it was too dark and the grounds around the pit was too dangerous for heavy equipment, the fire brigade returned to their station without being able to do anything.

They didn’t think that the fire was an immediate danger to the buildings in the area and besides, they didn’t have enough water to really put the fire out.  The pit is deep and it contains about 20 meter of waste, which was smouldering.  Fire like this can take weeks before it is extinguished.

The fire brigade came back on Saturday morning.  The rain and hard wind didn’t help any.  It only stirred up more smoke.  They ordered the owner to take measures and pour sand over the fire.  The owner promised to do this and would involve Atco, a permanent customer on this dump.

Surprisingly, instead of bringing sand, Atco came with three trucks full of pallet residue.  The drivers were ordered by their boss to empty the trucks.  They didn’t know more. Atco was not available for comments on Monday morning.

The situation was worse on Sunday.  Several neighbours that could no longer stand the smell went elsewhere; away from the smoke.  Also on Sunday did the fire department monitor the fire.  They did this with a helicopter.  The wisp of smoke was gigantic, but there was no danger for the neighbouring buildings.   On Monday morning the environmental police wasn’t even aware of problems on Monk.  They promised to get informed as soon as possible and figure out what legal steps can be taken against the owner and users of the illegal dump.

The neighbours instituted legal proceedings against the owner to force him to take measures.  They also want to make the owner and users liable for all the consequences of this fire and smoke development.  The fire department didn’t determine how the air quality in the wisp of smoke is.

With all the money Aruba says all those tourists are spending, they are telling us tourism is up, and that the island is 96 miles, how hard is it to regulate and monitor waste dumps?

Oops I forgot, must be a stretch for Aruba, they sent Dave Holloway to look for his daughter in the dumps, and then deliberately dumped more garbage to distract him, from the looking at places where she may have been.

Get that fire hot, real hot, hot enough to throw on some hot dogs and roast some big fat pigs.

An Island that has a fire out of control? never mind that the oil refinery is polluting the air, now they have this? they better hurry and get JUSTICE FOR NATALEE before the ppl there just perish from their own stupidity. First the natural bridge falls…the oil spills and now this???do you know that there is an abundance of dogs and cats on LIERUBA and in march some ppl are going there to spade them all???
Richard, RAMM posts at BFN and I amoung others have told him that we here@ SM are waiting to read his letter when he gets round to it. It seems he has claimed on BFN that writting letters to his QUEEN wont do any good!!!I dare that IDIOT to come back here..THE LIAR

Modern day trash or dumpsite dabre burning is quite dangerous. Chemical reactions several. Some of the plastics are very scary. Some slight, not visable or noticeable to smell at all, wiffs of this stuff can set off asthema attacks very easily, even heart attacks…wonder if Aruba is even monitoring such, yet it is occurring all the same. Cancers can take around 20 yrs to develope from an expossure. There are numerous more dangerous items in a landfill, but one seemingly harmless thing burning can be brass, which has heavy metal, including lead…from this small item to worse. Folks around those parts are going to have an excuse for being dumb and not seeing anything. Truth and island language will become more ‘involved’.

Thanks for the info, Vicki … always good to hear why he thinks nobody can do anything.

This story about the underground fires, and the photo, are eerily evocative of Hell. No surprise, perhaps….

i do not want to think about natalee’s body being disposed of in one of these illegal dumps. how many dumps like this are there on the vile isle?

    8. SL-Gloria on February 6th, 2007 11:47 am

I think the dump is in MOKO not MONK. Moko is the place close to Noord where the Equusearch Team dogs once got a false postive, the day Simian mistakenly announced that they had found Natalee.

Thanks … there were typos within the Amigoe article. Seemed to have been spelled in 2 different ways.

Brings up the question regarding illegal dumps in Aruba …

Is something considered illegal if it is known to exist and people actively use it without any reprisal from authorities or the Govt?

Is anything really illegal on Aruba?
      R

    10. Miss-Underestimated on February 6th, 2007 12:05 pm

No actually, I can’t think of anything that has been in this case that is illegal. Lying to investigators, that’s not illegal. Judge calling off the search at your good buddies house, that’s not illegal.

Joran was drinking and gambling in a casino underage, on video no less.

So I guess there is nothing illegal.

I think it may be illegal to tell the truth on Aruba, yeah, that’s it. Can’t tell the truth in Aruba or they’ll succumb you to self inflicted injuries or worse death.

    11. vicki on February 6th, 2007 12:18 pm

Miss-U, there is a site called boycottwatch and in it it speaks about the aruba boycott. It says its in full swing and LIERUBA is hurting. Also states that if the devils island would lie about tourism, what else are they lieing about!!!Hmmmmmmmm

      Ramm,

You didn’t even finish your letter?

      done.

      What a cop-out!

If there are any Dutch living nearby that landfill they are in for a windfall lawsuit. Those judges lay down and roll over for their own.

    14. Richard on February 6th, 2007 12:34 pm

Apropos of nothing, I got a reply from the queen today.

It’s curious; the Dutch seem to use these big envelopes even for one piece of paper.

Anyway, it was on a sheet paper with what I guess is the royal coat of arms and the words “Kabinet der Koningin” on top in blue and gold.

      It goes as follows:

      Dear (Richard),

(Actually, it was to mr. and my last name, and mr. was in all lower case. Use of the comma is in line with British custom, but seems rather casual to American taste.)

Instructed by Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands I have the honour (sic) to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated January 15, 2007.

In accordance with Her Majesty’s wish your letter has been forwarded to the Governor of Aruba.

      Yours faithfully,

      /s/
      (Mrs. N. van der Pol)

for the Director of the Queen’s Office

      (end)

It took the prime minister several months to reply to two of my letters, and before he did I was sent a notification telling me that he would be answering later. So maybe I’m deemed worthy of a speedy reply … only two weeks! … from Her Majesty.

If Rammstein comes back, maybe he knows who Mrs. etc. is.

What ever happened to Joran’s girl friend (hired help) that was in the photos taken with him on one crapy island? The girl with the personal web site that had animal pictures and such that was taken down shortly after the pics hit the web.

    17. Richard on February 6th, 2007 2:16 pm

Too bad we can’t get some photos of things like these dumps burning, the Valero refinery emitting stenches, wild dogs roaming the streets, the drug addicts doing the same, the garbage lying all around ….

Then publish them as “The Real Aruba” and send all travel agents the link.

Think that might make a difference?

The dump fire will burn until the Mansur Family allocates the equipment needed to extinguish it. The Aruba Authorities were just quoted as saying ‘What dump fire? and for that matter, what dump?’

During a follow up session, the same Authorities were then quoted as saying ‘that must be a dump on Curacao.’

The Aruban Fire Department is still working on the Choose A Name fire and will be tied up until August.

And if that is indeed the tenor of Beth’s remarks (remember when she said that she remained quiet to help the investigation, and that if she chose to spoke up she had information “that would shake the world”?), with facts behind it … does anyone think Oduber would continue this charade for a failed wannabe judge and three punk kids?

You might be interested in the fact that here in the good ol’ US of A we have our own version of a fire burning out of control that our government has all but given up on.

I am speaking of an actual fire that has burned for over 40 years underground and that has not been put out by out by the government and that continues to pollute the atomosphere unabated.

Centralia, PA is the location and here is a supporting link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania and http://www.smithsonianmagazine.com/issues/2005/may/firehole.php.

The cause of the on-going Centralia fire? Burning trash that ingnited the coal. It is suggested that the fire could potentially burn another 250 years.

Perhaps before we sneer in disgust at occurences of others, we should first look introspectively to ensure that we harbor no similar atrocities.

    41. Richard on February 7th, 2007 5:33 am

Well, my feeling is that they can hardly be blamed for the collapse of a natural attraction. In New Hampshire some years back, a geological formation known as the Old Man of the Mountain … an outcropping on a mountain that looked like the lean, harsh face of a New Hampshire farmer … collapsed and slid down the mountain.

That event took its psychic toll on us New Englanders. After all, Nathaniel Hawthorne and a lot of other people had written about it. But nobody blamed New Hampshire, whose motto remains “Live free or die.”

But all the man-made stuff that detracts from Aruba’s image could be compiled. In between, we could have articles about things like the American couple drugged in the casino … the man was beaten up and the woman was taken out to the desert and raped. Stuff that happens to tourists and is to be expected on a vacation.

Photos of the Mafia figures who have met in Aruba.

The list goes on and on ….

    42. Richard on February 7th, 2007 5:35 am

Come to think of it, we could even have a “Where are they now?” section.

Featuring people like Steve Cohen (“They will be interrogated again”), Reuben von Trappenburg (the odious guy who was obnoxious generally), Karin Janssen (“Look for fireworks in January”) … the list goes on and on.

Dave Holloway’s perspective of Aruba in his book, The Untold Story of Natalee Holloway and Corruption in Paradise, leaves readers with a vivid mental image regarding “Aruban Paradise”.
      .

      .
In fact, he (Jacobs) was so confident that she was just partying it up or on drugs that he told us this particular bar would be the best place to find her. However, he did warn us to watch our drinks very carefully, adding that sometimes people put drugs into them.
      .
      Page 10
      .
While customers must pass by a bouncer at the door, there was no indication that he was stopping anyone from entering. The bar was packed with teenagers doing Jell-O shots and sleazy-looking island boys preying on the beautiful young female tourist.
      .
I did not want to stay inside, so we hung out around the street corners. In less than two hours, we probably experienced at least ten to fifteen offers from various drug dealers who wanted us to buy from them.
      .
      Page 16
      .
During our daylight searches throughout the island, our group came across many abandoned houses where drug addicts had left razors and other drug paraphernalia. Some were filled with foul smelling odors, feces, urine, cardboard boxes they used as blankets or beds, and general trash. One of those houses was located right next to a fine restaurant near the hotel area and a McDonald’s.
      .
Several times, people came into the hotel to meet with other locals and an apparent drug deal was taking place. The person would come in to scope out the area prior to doing the deal.

There’s a story out today that, believe me, you won’t want to read about or hear about. If anything can be more horrible, I can’t imagine it.

The story is about an international child porn ring, based in Austria. People from all over the world, including “hundreds” from the United States, would connect to it and watch children 14 and under being … abused.

The only reason I raise this matter is that we were told that one of Joran’s associates, someone named Freddy whatever, I believe, was known to be involved with such trash. I’m wondering if somehow a connection can be found to this ring.

The actual “footage” apparently came from Russia, and many of the children apparently were from eastern Europe.

If they ever find out who conducted this … I can’t think of any other crime that screams out as urgently for the death penalty. The only question is, I think, who would administer it … the governments in question or the inmates of the jails where these animals would be put.

If they find who in the U.S. connected, knowingly, to this stuff, I think they should be prosecuted and their names and addresses should be preserved in a register and published. And that they not be allowed to change their names … let anyone who associates with them know of their crimes.

    50. Richard on February 7th, 2007 12:40 pm

Justice for Natalee (#48), thanks for the info on the date of the hearing decision.

Thanks also for posting that link. If the information there is accurate, that helps explain how and why media whore Steve Cohen emerged from nowhere to represent the Aruban government … he was on retainer, so to speak.

What does this suggest? For one thing, from day one Aruba was much more concerned about its image than about getting answers to Natalee’s case. None of us is surprised, right?

But this makes me think, even more, that something darker is involved, and that Aruba knew it would have to obfuscate, slander, and do anything EXCEPT get the answers in Natalee’s case.

Call me crazy if you want, but I don’t believe that all this would be done for one failed judge and three punks.

    51. vicki on February 7th, 2007 12:48 pm

Richard, I believe it goes further than the ones named. I think that movies were made and that PM odeber was there. Alot of FILTH coming to light. It seems that anyone in power can do whatever they want and nothing will happen to them. It can be a known fact with eye witnesses and still it will be swept under the rug. If thats how they treat the pplwho live there, why would they care about a tourist.

    52. Richard on February 7th, 2007 12:58 pm

Vicki, I don’t have any idea about Oduber … but the article I posted does speak to the extent of that business.

The article first gave the ages of the children involved as “0-14,” but later said that no infants were involved.

So it’s anyone’s guess, and everyone’s nightmare. I honestly can’t believe that anyone in the human species could do such a thing for money … and I don’t think any other species does it. I know it happens, I just can’t believe it.

But given that such a business obviously does exist, and that somehow or other word can get from continent to continent about where this stuff can be found on the Internet (I doubt that cockroaches would carry the news; their moral standards are above this, I’m sure) … given all this, are we still prepared to say that Natalee was not handed over to a ring of drug lords/pornographers/white slavers, or what you will?

I don’t mean THIS SPECIFIC group … but remember that in Latin America, where Americans aren’t much admired to begin with, trafficking of women is estimated at, I think, a $16 billion business.

    53. Richard on February 7th, 2007 1:07 pm

Correction: I didn’t post the article, as it was too horrible. I referred to it, which is bad enough.

    54. vicki on February 7th, 2007 1:14 pm

Richard, what would be worse in your mind…your daughter killed or sold into slavery for sex? i myself just dont know…If Natalee is alive than I guess she was taken. I would pray it was to a person who would treat her right. In my fantasy, i like to think that a handsome prince from another country, saw her and fell in love with her and just took her.But then I realize, I am only dreaming.

    55. Richard on February 7th, 2007 2:38 pm

Vicki, I can’t answer that question. In any case, what I want or would prefer is irrelevant. Even if she were taken off Aruba, it doesn’t prove that she is still alive.

In researching, I found the following link. It explores what to me is the inconceivable … but though I can’t accept the conclusions, a lot of what the writer says is documented. And the Belgian pedophile Marc Dutroix (spelling?) was undoubtedly real, unfortunately.

Those who believe the conclusions of this writer will have no trouble in believing that Oduber and others in Aruba were implicated in Natalee’s fate, as “Shango” seems to suggest. I don’t know … but read and see for yourselves.

Vicki- Im not Richard, but your question reminded me of something poignant that Paul Reynolds said, “Give us back a broken Natalee and we can fix her”.

So I guess alive is always better that dead.

Thanks Rob, I had forgotten that. My prayers are with thefamily and friends of Natalee. God bless you all

      .
The appointment of Steve Cohen as spokesperson for the Natalee Holloway investigation was not about truth being revealed ….. it was about Aruba’s image.
      .
      DR. PHIL SHOW
      .
Steve Cohen, special advisor to Aruba, came on the show hoping for a chance to talk to Beth about where the investigation stands today. Dr. Phil turns to Steve. “So, you’re a paid consultant?” he asks
      .
      “That’s correct,” Steve replies.
      .
“And, who pays you?” Dr. Phil probes.
      .
“I’m actually paid by the tourism industry, which is the Aruban Tourism Authority, and also a group called AHACA, which is an association of hotel owners on the island.”
      .
      ARUBA TRUTH
      .
Steve Cohen commenting on his appointment said, “It is my hope that we can overcome the inaccuracies and distortions about Aruba that have emerged with the Holloway case. It is time that the American public gets the truth about Aruba, as a safe and hospitable destination, where the rule of law is firmly in place.”

    61. JusticeforNatalee on February 7th, 2007 6:59 pm

“… where the rule of law is firmly in place.”

      Laughable but not funny.

    62. Richard on February 7th, 2007 7:32 pm

Janet, I totally agree. What they got with Steve Cohen was a media-savvy whore who would appeal to a WASP audience.

(In an earlier thread, I said that Cohen was a WASP … and was properly taken to task, as he is Jewish, or so I presume. In any case, the point was … he would look like the kind of media spokesman that Aruba would think Americans would take to.)

Truth has nothing to do with Aruba.

If Cohen had said simply, “It is time that the American public gets the truth about Aruba,” and left it at that, he would have deserved a round of applause. As it is ….

    63. Patti on February 7th, 2007 7:34 pm

      Richard:

Thanks for the head’s up. I read your articles this afternoon and found them to be both sad an compelling. Considering Belgium is right next door to The Netherlands, I thought it compelling that there was mention that one of the corrupt officials has ties to the Hague. Undoubtedly, these people continue to be in operation, even today. How many reports have we had from law enforcement officials in Canada that state that thousands of sex slaves are being transported from various countries in Europe, Belgium being one of them, through Canada and down through San Francisco?

It makes me wonder, why it is that these reports are coming out of Canada, but you rarely hear of it in the U.S.? The other thing that I found compelling is that the victims of the ring that operated in Belgium speak of parties where there is not just sexual rapes and torture going on at these parties, but also murders!

Maybe Vicki is right, although there is no proof of it, because the Belgium article speaks of there being pictures taken at these parties, to be used for the black-mailing of government officials. We can’t say, for sure, that there is such a ring operating in Aruba. But, certainly, if there is, the success of the ring in Belgium speaks highly for how one would operate, undetected for years.

How many girls go missing in Columbia and Venezuela per year?

#55 – Richard – better to just copy and paste that article rather than post to this guy’s website. Allen Aslan Heart is clearly anti-semetic and strongly believes the holocaust was a hoax. Good article, and I got your Cohen point when you originally posted, but folks, you gotta look at the overall site when linking.

    66. mayan_moons on February 8th, 2007 12:20 am

      Hey Tibrogargan!

I see you chatting in the cage, hope all is good for you.
I know you live in OZ but where in Oz are you friend?

    67. Richard on February 8th, 2007 6:13 am

Yoyo (#65), I get your point. Some of the marginal things that came up when you click on that site are truly bizarre.

That Web site appears to be devoted to all kinds of conspiracy theories … nothing is as it seems, and everything is rife with secret doings, media manipulation, etc. Sigmund Freud said “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,” and likewise, sometimes an event is neither more nor less than what it appears to be.

The article itself was way too long to paste here. If I keep posting things like that, sooner or later I’ll be thrown off the site for taking up space!

But in Natalee’s case, most of us believe there IS something more going on than meets the eye. The doings in Aruba, I think, justify the suspicion of some kind of cover-up. So the questions are: to whose benefit? And why Natalee in particular?

The article whose link I posted did say that Marc Dutroux or one of his allies spoke of “kidnapping to order”; i.e., I guess that some pervert wanted a pre-teen girl of a particular physical description and characteristics.

Is that true, or is the guy just mythmaking? Is he so psychotic that he conjures up this stuff out of nowhere?

Obviously, I don’t know. But if you act on the saying “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire” then these kinds of tales must at least be read.

We know that Joran van der Sloot was hanging around the group of Mountain Brook kids, who were on the island for (I believe) four days. We know they went to a rock concert and beaches, places where they could have been subject to observation.

Nearly two years later, and events remain shrouded in silence and mystery. One would think that Aruba would at least be making statements saying that it continues to investigate, etc., but we don’t even hear that. Instead, this continued silence.

Remember the article I posted earlier … trafficking women in Latin America is a $16 billion business. On that site, the one whence came this article, it was said that according to Interpol, the going price in the Middle East for a young, blond girl like Natalee is $1 million.

No other source was given. Myth? Reality? I don’t know.

Had I not been so involved in the Amy Bradley case, I might dismiss the whole thing as far-fetched. But I can’t.

    68. Richard on February 8th, 2007 6:33 am

By the way, Beth Twitty will be speaking at Wake Forest University around the end of February. Her topic is safety during spring break.

    69. Richard on February 8th, 2007 8:55 am

Just one more thing … on that article, the link to which I posted above, a young woman who reportedly divulged “detailed” information about the high Belgian officials who allegedly attended the child-abuse meetings was denounced as “insane” by the Belgian government.

The writer said that numerous mental health professionals have testified to the opposite, but gave no citations or names.

This got me wondering … remember that there were two witnesses who reported seeing Joran and the Kalpoes in the parked car near the pond in the early morning? One of them later decamped from Aruba, supposedly ahead of deportation for being there illegally and working there without permission. (Why Aruba would be after this one guy so strongly, since there are many illegal workers there, isn’t clear.)

Remember that the other witness was said to be insane, and the last we knew was confined in a mental institution? (I might be mixing him up with one of the people who reported seeing a blond woman being buried at the landfill.)

None of this proves anything, of course, but it is odd (I think, anyway) that Aruba just said “He’s insane and is confined in a mental home” and we never heard anything more.

Nor have we heard anything more of the woman who reported seeing FOUR boys with sweaty faces and a shovel on the morning that Natalee vanished.

Nor have we heard anything more about that early-morning jogger who reportedly called police with a tip.

Nor have we heard … but you get the point.
