Another School Bus Incident … 5 Year old Omar Murray Left Off in Queens Housing Project

Another week, another school bus incident. This time a Long Island City public school bus Omar Murraydriver left 5 year old Omar Murray off the bus in the middle of a Queens housing project, approximately 9 blocks away from his house. Unbelievable. One wonders what this driver was thinking. The incident was a multitude of errors, including the fact that Omar was not even supposed to be on the bus in the first place. Luckily a responsible mother picking up her child did the responsible thing and helped the young boy.

Omar Murray doesn’t even take a school bus to get home from school, but a PS-112 school aide in Long Island City mistakenly placed him on one after dismissal on Friday afternoon. But his mother isn’t angry because of that mistake, but rather what happened once her son got onto the bus.

“About nine blocks from my house he was thrown off the bus and left with a stranger,” Jackelyn Soto, Murray’s mother, told CBS 2. “She took him without checking a list.”

Murray rode the entire route — about a mile long — and ended up at the Queensbridge housing project where he says the bus driver threw him off. (WCBS-TV)

Who knew riding a bus could be so difficult?

They say accidents don’t just happen. They certainly don’t especially on school buses these days. God only knows what could have happened if it were not for the responsible parent who helped out. Coming soon to another school district near you … a law suit.

Sounds to me the teacher’s aide and the bus
driver need to go to a different job…
      on the little bus.

      That’ll Work!

We have the same problem in Louisiana as do most States.
The qualification for a bus driver should not be a brain
scan and a 4th grade education.

What is up with bus drivers! On the news here locally a 53 yr. old man, hired by the contracted busing company for Columbus schools was pulled over (with no kids on at the time, thank God!) for driving radically. The police found a syringe full of cocaine on the drivers seat!

      This is just insane!

That is all it will end up about. A freakin law suit. Forget the lawsuit. fire the two idiots and ban them from every working for any government agency again. Let them face any criminal law and forget it. I’m so tired of lawsuits I look at anyone who files one as a criminal as much as the idiots who screwed up.\

Can we please start really doing back ground checks on people that are teachers, custodians and anyone who works around children in schools.

Then can we give them a common sense test that asks a bus driver the following:

You are at the end of your route and you find you have an extra child on board your bus, what do you do?

      A. Slap the kid upside the head and yell at them why they missed their stop.

      B. Kick the kid off the bus and make sure that there are child predators outside your bus.

      C. Drive the opposite direction from where the kid lives so you make a 5 yr old walk twice the distance through unsafe streets.

      D. Find out the child’s name and address and either make a special drop to where he lives or call the school and ask what you shoudl do in their special situation.

      HMMM …

Thank God for the fact that a responsible parent was able to step in and care for this child until he was reunited with his family. This could have ended so tragically.
The problem with bus drivers is that the pay is low, so at times the job does not attract high quality personnel. And many kids today are a discipline problem, so the stress is high. Add into that traffic woes, mechanical issues, and the fact that the work is not year round, and you can see why the cream of the crop may not always care to apply. My children have had some wonderful, caring bus drivers, and they’ve had some that were not so great. This driver was either poorly trained or uncaring. There is no excuse for either one.
