UN CRISIS FUERA DI PROPORCION! /A Crisis Out of Proportion!

The following was an editorial from the Aruban newspaper, Diario, earlier this week by Jossy M. Mansur that we thought all should see and read.

Sin cu nos tabata kier ni a buske, Aruba a haya su mes den un luz basta negativo durante e ultimo dos simannan, pa motibo di un caso cu ta sigui mantene nos atencion claba riba dje.

E tin e apariencia di no ta bayendo ningun caminda, cu el a stanca, cu e speranza di haya Natalee cu bida ta menguando. Hopi hende, tanto local como stranhero, a buske tur caminda sin exito. …

(For the rest of the editorial in Papiamentu)

English translation, thank you Aruba girl & iquitos.

Without us looking for or wanting it, Aruba found itself in a fairly negative light during the last two weeks, because of a case that keeps our attention nailed on it. It has the appearance of not going anywhere, that it is stuck, that the hope of finding Natalee alive is fading. Many peple, both locals and foreigners, looked for her everywhere without success. Sophisticated equipment and expert dogs were used in localizing buried bodies without any positive results. The girl keeps being missed; she vanished without leaving any trace, creating a mystery that is going on for a long time.

Where else is left for us to look for her? Could she be hidden in some house, protected by some friends or acquaintances, or is she being held against her will by whatever irregular group? Could she have reached the U.S? It doesn’t matter if she left her passport behind, because Americans can leave Aruba with any identification such as driver’s license, Social Security card, or birth certificate. Could she be in Venezuela or Colombia? It’s improbable, but always that possibility keeps on existing. With a fast launch you could reach the closest coast of Falcon in half an hour. And if she is dead, why can’t any trace of her remains be found?

That this case can affect tourism? Of course, but that’s not our primary preoccupation. What has us worried is Natalee herself.Whatever fall in tourism we can recover from, but Natalee is irreplaceable! It’s the human factor that occupies our minds and hearts, because the material part, i.e. the tourism, we can fix. It’s the pain of her family that we share; it’s the worry of the parents that captured our compassion.

I hold the opinion that no matter how many paint Aruba black in the U.S., there will always be others that defend our island because they know and are aware that Aruba still is one of the safest places in the world. It’s not our beauty of our beaches alone that calls the attention of our tourists that visit our island repeatedly and in great numbers, it’s the human quality of our people that captured their hearts. It’s the treatment that they receive from our people that reflect in their feelings, that’s why they are now rewarding us with kind words, with their defense of our island, with their public protests against those who without knowing our island or our people are so eager to voice negative opinions without the benefit of reality.

Because Aruba is not a place where crime has a high incident, a case like this will have so much attention in other countries. It is an isolated incident, perpetrated by (an) element(s) that are foreign to our culture, to our peaceful disposition, to our broad, open and decent character as a People. It is also a case that is surrounded in clouds of mystery that every time become more dense, less penetrable by even the most expert eyes in the police and investigative world. This is a disappearance that has no concrete evidence, something sold on which the Police can work. Aside from that, it is my understanding that the detainees are not saying anything additional [to their story], just simply that they left Natalee (with or without Joran) at the area somewhat north of the Marriott hotel. This story they are repeating with insistence, although there are also various discrepancies in their statements.

Referring to the efficiency of our police force, let no one fool themselves: it is one of the best in our region, and definitely one that we can say with conviction of being very professional. Those of us who have followed their activities closely in the last 25 years can say that they are a police force with a high integrity, and that discards any possibility of a cover-up or guilt based on friendship with whatever family of any detainee. In my book of all the crime that took place on our island during the last 25 years, the confident activities of the Aruba police force are written in gold letters!

The case of Natalee put us in a great emotional crisis, and others that do not know our island and don’t know how our People reasons, converted it into a public relations crisis out of all proportion. In Aruba there are no criminals that walk around thinking up evil with every step, we don’t have the sociopaths that get their hands on a revolver and start shooting like crazy on innocent people; Aruba is a quiet island, full of humanism and consideration to the well-being of others. That’s why, in the name of all that is fair, it is time for this negative image that has been voluntary or involuntary created of our island by some media that doesn’t even know where Aruba is, to be corrected. That’s also why some of us accepted to give declarations to one or the other U.S. channel, not to find fame or create an image that will disappear together with the return of those media outlets, but to halt any damage that has been caused by this mystery.

There is nothing left for me to say that I hope that Natalee is alive and that she will find the road back to her home, her family and her friends in Birmingham, city that I know we, and that the People of Alabama, who in my personal experience in that State, are equal to us in greatness of hearts and sense of compassion. As a matter of fact, I studied and graduated in Mobile, Alabama and can speak with certain authority on the human quality of its People. Let us not come to the wrong conclusions about this because a channel without importance or national coverage, got it in its head to call for a boycott that will not be heard or followed by the rest of the American public, and that is also not in line with the American concept of ‘fair play’.

The below comment is what is making all of us who are consumed with this story worry about this beautiful young girl.

That this case can affect tourism? Of course, but that’s not our primary preoccupation. What has us worried is Natalee herself. Whatever fall in tourism we can recover from, but Natalee is irreplaceable! It’s the human factor that occupies our minds and hearts, because the material part, i.e. the tourism, we can fix. It’s the pain of her family that we share; it’s the worry of the parents that captured our compassion.

Hopefully peach of mind and in our hearts will come soon with some answers we all are hoping for.

    2. TexasBelle on June 24th, 2005 3:35 pm

I can not help but wonder if the author of that article actually watches the news or has kept up with the Natalee Holloway disappearance at all.

I do agree that we can not hold a entire nation at fault for what has happened. But to mention or even suggest that Natalee may have caught a plane home with only her license or id card is absurd. Does this person not know that there are 5 suspects being held on serious suspicions of what they may have done to this girl or with her.

I do not blame Aruba nor its people for this, but the ones that have committed the crime I as well as many others do. Why even sugar coat this and print it in a paper for hundreds to read. Something happened that night and apparently there must be some sufficient facts to support it or there would not be five people sitting in jail.

I highly doubt a person that seemed to have such a good head on her shoulders and such a smart and giving girl would let her family friends and her country watch a wild goose chase if she took off on her own. That is insane and to try and make people even think that is absurd. She was taken against her will, drugged whatever.

    3. San on June 24th, 2005 3:37 pm

Sometimes we make our minds run away with our imagination just to erase the pain of the reality.

Brovo,Jossy M. Mansur- I, myself-had studied at Birmingham-Southern College and University of Alabama in Birmingham, and lived at Homewood, bordering Mountain Brooks. The kids and folks in Mountain Brooks, not a typical Alabamian. They thought they owned the world and the whole world revolved around them. Most of them self-righteous and thought they were on top of the world-but actually they are just plain upper-middle class-”country hicks”.
As the other two girls related,in the interviews, it was Natalee who approached Yoran, and they just met that nite (of the 30th)-contrary to what had been reported.
I, believed these two girls’ accounts, it fit a typical Mountain Brooks kids ,would do.

TexasBelle, he is the owner and publisher of the largest newspaper in Aruba. A well-respected man. He just painted scenarios. Just like the 24-hour news media has painted out of proportion scenarios about the island itself.

    7. AllyinMiami on June 24th, 2005 4:41 pm

Simian, do u know that someone is impersonated u on the other thread?

    8. Florida Boy on June 24th, 2005 4:44 pm

      Rivie:

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are a troll. Otherwise, your post is irrelevant to the issue, patronizing to the apparent victim, and void of logic and reason.

    9. TexasBelle on June 24th, 2005 4:46 pm

Simian thank you for letting me know that but I did not ask “who” wrote it and frankly I could care less as to who wrote it , but what was wrote, I agree with him on “many” things he wrote about I simply stated that the theory of Natalee hitching a ride on a plane back to the US was well silly. On the other points I do agree.

On additional note I am not impressed that he owns the ” largest paper in Aruba” did not ask do not care. Now had it been a really big paper say like the Dallas Mourning News or the Houston Chronicle then the impressed state would have been there.

Never the less I hope Natalee is reunited with her family soon and that life in Aruba as well as here in the US especially Alabama can find some sort of normality again.

    10. HNR on June 24th, 2005 4:47 pm

ARUBA IS FULL OF SHIT! That is nothing but a lie. There isn’t anyone in the local government of Aruba that gives a damn about Natalee. If they did they wouldn’t have waited so long to obtain evidence from Van Der Sloot’s house. Hell yeah this is going to hurt there tourism I hope it wipes the whole damn island out. People should be thinking, ” Well if I go to Aruba, and one of their locals wants to kill me. They will get by with it.” “Why would I want to go there?” Aruba needs to do what is right and quit covering up Van Der Sloot’s shit. I hope the Van Der Sloot’s are worth the millions that Aruba is going to lose by covering up for those dumb asses.

    11. Tazman on June 24th, 2005 4:49 pm

Daddy wouldn’t have been arrested, and the others wouldn’t still be in jail if Natalee had simply just taken off and flew home without her passport, medicine and/or telling any family or friends. And her family wouldn’t still be there looking for her!!

Daddy was a well known attorney who just might have defended a few individuals that could possibly “owe” him. He, or someone else could have a beach house, apartment or time share that could be researched and searched. And, what about my last 2 comments about any old houses possibly converted into restaurants that might have underground rooms and tunnels similar to one that is on the island of Nassau, Bahamas. They were used during the slave trading days.

It seems to me that the Aruba police are quite efficient and are therefore, probably not keeping those individuals in jail just for the “experience”!!

Everyone appreciates all the efforts of the Arubans in helping to search for Natalee. I have never been to Aruba but if I ever do visit, it will be because of all the wonderful Arubans that are doing everything they can to help. The Arubans are the ones that know the island the best! And, probably have the best ideas on what is really going on!

    12. sockettoomey on June 24th, 2005 4:54 pm

I live in Mountain Brook. Its obvious to me people in B’ham who do not live in Mountain Brook don’t particularly care for us. In addition, I live in the USA and people who don’t live in the USA don’t particularly care for us either. I guess thats just the way it is.

In Mountain Brook we have people who are loud and obnoxious. We also have people who are very loving and caring. I bet the same could just about be said for any community, culture or religion.

Let’s just hope Natalee returns alive — regardless of where she grew up.

    13. givepeaceachance on June 24th, 2005 4:56 pm

HNR, don’t! This is not the thanks Aruba should be getting in helping trying to find the solution inthis case. I’ve seen hundreds of Arubans sacrifice their free time to help with the search. Local companies are helping with anything from water to boats. The justice system is working very hard at this, even according to Beth Holloway. Don’t make this personal. You are punishng a country for something that was out of their hands. Aruba is showing compassion towards us, don’t we owe at least that back?

    14. arubagirl on June 24th, 2005 4:58 pm

I’m not too sure how ‘well-respected’ Jossy Mansur is.

Also, I think that he may have to step back from the bad crack. He thinks that it is more likely that NH reached the U.S. under her own driver’s license than her being abducted / kidnapped to Ven.? I don’t think the last scenario is that likely, but uhm, yeah, she’ll just stroll through U.S. immigration… Don’t think so.

    15. brian on June 24th, 2005 4:59 pm

been following this pretty extensively. i still say theres something much larger brewing in this whole thing than just an od/rape/murder plot. i cant put my finger on it though. i dont understand how a murder could implicate so many people. according natalees parents, they think their will be more arrests. natalee’s father even suggested up to 8-10 other people brought in as witness and/or suspects when he was talking to alan colmes i believe. why would up to 12-14 people in total be involved in a /rape/murder? and how would that many people become implicated in the middle of the night. with a given time period of say 4- hrs. any single person could rape or murder any other single person. does not make sense at all. very little advancement into the investigation and so far, it would appear natalee has vanished without any trace or trail to her whereabouts. thats too clean of a coverup and theres no such thing as a perfect crime. any thoughts?

    16. JC on June 24th, 2005 4:59 pm

Texasbelle, your view of the owner/publisher of the Diario is on point. His comment about Natalee leaving on her own accord is frivolous. For those who are not familiar with the term frivolous, it means BRAINLESS!

    17. Florida Boy on June 24th, 2005 5:01 pm

      Socket:

Don’t let a few ignorant folks taint your world view. The majority of what I have seen and heard of your community and its people has been positive. Clearly, your community has rallied around a common cause and are unified in their hopes and prayers of finding Natalee. Through the tragic circumstances, the Holloway family and your community have served as an inspiration.

    18. traveller on June 24th, 2005 5:10 pm

I am wondering if they looked in any of those crack houses or in the poor areas of Aruba.Maybe she’s been held there.

    19. brian on June 24th, 2005 5:14 pm

      traveller -

its possible. even deepak is believed to have said they figured she’d end up in a crackhouse somewhere and eventually turn up. joran is to supposed to have said the same thing to classmates before his arrest, or atleast something similar i dont have any confirmation on that though. just what ive been reading.

    20. mustang66 on June 24th, 2005 5:17 pm

The fact that Natalee’s body hasn’t been found means either she was thrown into the ocean or else was sold into white slavery in South America. No other scenarios make sense. Either way, the United States are the big guns in the Western Hemisphere, and I believe we should keep the pressure on Aruba. Just whisper the word “colony” to them and it should get their collective act in order. You don’t see people being sold into slavery in the US. Unless Aruba puts an end to this, they will always be known as a second-class, third-world country. I will never waste my tourism dollars there becuae I wouldn’t feel safe. BOYCOTT ARUBA!! BOYCOTT ARUBA!! BOYCOTT ARUBA!!

    24. TexasBelle on June 24th, 2005 5:25 pm

mustang66 We can not blame all Aruba for this it is not fair to the good people that live there and are making a valued effort to find out what happened. And Americans are curious about everything, have you ever been in a traffic jam caused by a wreck? People just have to drive by the scene slowly in hopes they “might” see something, anything. A home catches on fire and the entire neighborhood fills the street to see a glimpse of a house on fire. I think the opposite will happen for the curiosity seekers to go and see what Aruba is all about.

And with this being such a high profile and well publicized case if Aruba was not one of the safest places it surely will be with all eyes on them now. So to say boycott a nation or country is just dumb.

thats a very good question rachael. lots of people say aruba has a “no body, no crime” policy. gee…maybe thats why their crime statistics are so low. regardless, this whole thing just makes your head spin. im not even sure i care anymore about the step for step details of that night, just that theirs closure to this case and that natalee is returned to her family. it seems to me though, and ive said it before, theirs soemthing much bigger going on in this case than we all realize or know about.

    74. Rachael on June 24th, 2005 5:54 pm

Is there any new info? Why do they suspect mruder have they found her and not told us?

    75. Hopefloats on June 24th, 2005 5:54 pm

I am here just checking back and forth to see if the news has changed over from the explosion in St Louis

    76. Rachael on June 24th, 2005 5:54 pm

Simian where are you getting your info?

    77. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 5:54 pm

      Ally

Did you have a chance to read page 1185?????

    78. edie on June 24th, 2005 5:55 pm

There is no new info on the news. The only new info we are getting is from Simian

    79. Simian on June 24th, 2005 5:55 pm

The confrontation is going down. “You made me lie.” “You conspired against me.” “Coward.”

    80. AllyinMiami on June 24th, 2005 5:56 pm

Hi………………LUCY!!!!! ;-) …i only got a chance to read the end, and I was disturbed by the hackers….I am glad to see u, though………….and that SIM is still here

    81. edie on June 24th, 2005 5:56 pm

      who is confronting who Simian?

    82. Kimber on June 24th, 2005 5:56 pm

That article was ridiculous. Being the largest paper in Aruba isnt saying much, Aruba is not that large. And at this point even if Natalee left on her own I don’t think there would be 5 suspects detained…The truth will be coming out soon enough.

    83. Hopefloats on June 24th, 2005 5:57 pm

Sim is the water you are talking about that needs to be drained the place where NHs natural father was seen looking at on the news yesterday?

    84. mimi on June 24th, 2005 5:57 pm

      simian, what do you mean??

    85. Simian on June 24th, 2005 5:57 pm

The waters are low. The street are full. The night of Saint John. The fires will burn all around on the island. The smoke will clear tomorrow morning.

      I’m leaving…

    86. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 5:58 pm

      Ally

I am glad he is here too, but did you see that they will probably be charging both father and son given forensic evidence uncovered in Holland and given survaillance and telephone use follow up?

    87. edie on June 24th, 2005 5:58 pm

He get’s us all worked up then he leaves… It never fails

    88. Rachael on June 24th, 2005 5:58 pm

Edie, I can’t get Sim to answer me, where is Sim getting their info? DO you believe it?

    89. born 2 be wild on June 24th, 2005 5:58 pm

I will drive past the water reservoirs in Noord. The thing is that tonight is a night when people in Aruba light fires. A lot of smoke. Religious/Pagan ritual. There will be a lot of Police on the streets. There will also be a Foo Fighters concert w/no amplifiers and a comet is going to plow into the earth and little green men are going to zap mad cows w/their ray guns and the sky is going to turn purple and all of the fish in the ocean are going to come onto land and evolve over the next 375 million years into simians that will ultimately walk erect and soon thereafter on the timeline Bill Gates will patent MicroSoft Windows software which will be constantly upgraded and make him a very rich man who also happens to be charitable and then there will be a total eclipse of the earth and it will become very dark and… Any thoughts???

    90. mimi on June 24th, 2005 5:59 pm

please don’t go… give us something

    91. Rachael on June 24th, 2005 5:59 pm

I know this sounds crazy, guys…but whenever he speaks in these cryptic sentences…whatever he says, we are ablt to define when the truth comes out….he has been right, along with shock, and checkme almost 100% of the time…it sounds bizarre, I was cynical at first b/c i am a professional…but there word is usually correct..therefore, if u dont like it ignore them, the rest of us, want to hear him/her

    106. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 6:04 pm

      Rachel

June 24 is St. John’s day. On this day in the Caribbean people go to the beach swim in the middle of the night, dive in backwards, to make all bad vibes, curses and stuff like that go away.

In a couple of days, it will be St. Paul’s day and on June 29th, it will be St. Peter’s day. Other type of celevbrations will go along with nthese two other dates.

    107. Simian on June 24th, 2005 6:05 pm

Don’t try and hack the Simian. We smoke Nederweed. Genetically enigineered.

No battle. The man on the inside will call soon. The confrontation will last all night. The boy’s arrogance will be his downfall.

      I’m leaving now.

    108. Rachael on June 24th, 2005 6:05 pm

Allyin – So what are you saying you think he is saying?

    110. Simian on June 24th, 2005 6:06 pm

Lucy, thanks for the update, chica

This cult will take all of your money too since you are so easily brainwashed. Then you can commit suicide with them and catch a ride on the Hale Bopp comet. duhhh? Give me a break.

I’ll get my news from Reuters and CNN thank you. I think they have slightly more clout than Simian.

Why dont one of you say something substantial like:

I will drive past the water reservoirs in Noord. The thing is that tonight is a night when people in Aruba light fires. A lot of smoke. Religious/Pagan ritual. There will be a lot of Police on the streets. There will also be a Foo Fighters concert w/no amplifiers and a comet is going to plow into the earth and little green men are going to zap mad cows w/their ray guns and the sky is going to turn purple and all of the fish in the ocean are going to come onto land and evolve over the next 375 million years into simians that will ultimately walk erect and soon thereafter on the timeline Steve Jobs will patent the Apple computer which will be constantly upgraded and make him a very rich mand and then there will be a total eclipse of the earth and it will become very dark and… Any thoughts???

I hate born 2 be wild

    132. Hopefloats on June 24th, 2005 6:15 pm

I am beginning to think reading all Sims posts that this might not be the first time that this has happened with these guys and that others might have been drugged and this is just the first time they got caught because something bad happened. There could be others out there that havent came forward. It has been said that Joran brags about his conquests of girls using the date rape drug. Maybe the father was involved in all as well.

    133. born 2 be wild on June 24th, 2005 6:15 pm

hate me all you want losers you are all dumb for talking about NH anyways

    134. edward on June 24th, 2005 6:15 pm

The reason to two other boys Deepak and Satish
haven’t turned on Joran, is they are as guilty as him.
All three of these responsible for whatever did happen
to Natalee, so is they implicate
Joran – it would be the same as admitting to this
crime themselves. No friend would ever go threw this nightmare
to get Joran off the hook.

This group will never admitte to any crime.
The reason being – is that it’s not a crime to
attack female tourist in Aruba…. No other Abruban
has ever been charge with a crime against female
tourist there. Why should they be the first ????

If not for Beth Holloway, There would be a case.

I’m sorry buts thats the truth….

Edward I have been thinking just exactly what you wrote the whole time

    142. thomas on June 24th, 2005 6:17 pm

      Brian,

No body no crime in combination with no witness no direct leading evidence, means no conviction in aruba and in the US. Your OJ case had more proof than this case and no convictionas result. If the murderer keeps his or her mouth shut it is very difficult to convict him/her. I think Joran boy did it, but if he keeps his mouth shut we will probably never know. The US system as well as the Aruban system is based on “no doubt” to protect the innocent. The not so innocent uses the same system to ‘fly away’. Wake up Brian and come to reality, not every thing is better in the US nor in Aruba, just a little bit different.

    192. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:09 pm

      Kerri

There was a fake utilizing users’ names to write messages contrary to the real posters nature. Simian decided to go over to the beach, because today is St. John’s day and there will be “folkloric” celebrations in the island, but he is going via Noord, where they are searching or draining two water reservoirs.

SOmeone else reported that the Texan search party is active with the cadaver dogs.

Checkme and crs have taken a long break, Ally is not too far. I think in general, every body is in shock with the news that Paul and Joran may be charged with murder, obviously, because of the implications.

      anyone here?

An FBI agent that had witenessed the interrogations said that they are not being harsh at all.

    197. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 7:39 pm

hi peter. anything new in the news

    198. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:41 pm

      Kerri

I am here, waiting for everybody to come back. But today is friday and posters are probably unwinding.

    199. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 7:43 pm

So you don’t think anyone will be back? I really want to know what is going on!

    200. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 7:44 pm

The news doesn’t say anything and it seems like this place gets the news first anyway. I feel so bad for the families now that they are saying she is dead.

    201. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:47 pm

Yes, they’ll be back. But perhaps later on. A few are reading but not writting, some went to get a drink, the west coasters are driving home from work, Simian went to the beach, Ally went to a happy hour. Don’t worry, they’ll come.

I heard on the news the detainees will have to present themselves beforea judge tomorrow, so either, they will extend their stay of all or a few, one will probably be let go (the younger Kalpoe. I read that somewhere, dont remember the source though), plus as you have read here and in the previous page, it is believed that Paul and Joran will be charged.

      Hi everybody…

    203. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 7:52 pm

Did you guys here that they found the three missing PA boys dead in the trunk of their parents car?

    204. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:52 pm

You are right, no matter the outcome, this is a tragedy for all. But, lets not anticipate ourselves. You know how it has been, we thought to be cloe to the final truth many times, without success. To me still, the worst alternative would be that the van der Sloots are charged, because that would mean the end of this young girl. I preferred the option of kidnapped and alive …

    205. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 7:52 pm

just came back from a very long jog, long day at work without getting anything done… had to unwind a little after everything. Thank you for your expressed understanding, i did not expect that but it feels good, thank you very much.

      Hi checkme

    207. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:54 pm

But I just saw on TV a few hours ago the Camdem mother crying for her babies and calling them each by name and saying “Mommy is not angry at you??????

All of us have been missing you ,,,

    208. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 7:54 pm

with all this I strangely get more and more convinced that NH is still physically alive (sometimes I think she is more alive now than ever before during her time on earth, and I do not mean this negatively!)

    209. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:55 pm

      Check

Why don’t you go out and celebrate San Juan????? Don’t forget, jump in the water backwards!

    211. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 7:57 pm

Lucy, you are reading my mind.

      For all:

Aruba is going up in smoke tonight!!!

    212. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 7:57 pm

So what happens if they cannot find a body and she doesn’t turn up? No one willl be arrested?

    213. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 7:58 pm

      Checkme

If you feel she is alive, let your feelings be. I personally think is better to have her alive and because of this I don’t understand the excitement and joy with the possibility of a murder charge, if the body has not ben found.

    214. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 7:59 pm

I has to be such a strange feeling to be in aruba right now with a celebration going on and so much uncertainty in the air…

    215. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 7:59 pm

According to an old peagan tradition today is:

      Dia di Dera Gai.

It’s a folk feast, uniquely Aruban, well actually it came from the mainland many years ago, but it is considered one of the few truly Aruban cultural events.

    216. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:01 pm

We take day by day Kerri. Things and people come and go. Like the wind and the ocean waves hitting the north coast… they have always been there and they will always keep coming…

    217. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:01 pm

      Kerri

I understand that the theory of no body, no charge is not true. They said before that the forensic lab in Holland supposedly found evidence analysed from the van der Sloot’s cars.

    218. TexasBelle on June 24th, 2005 8:02 pm

O Simian I seemed to have upset you, my deepest apologizes. Your correct in description of me, for this I am proud. I have not once bashed your fellow country men nor country. It is the bottom feeders such as yourself that I have no use for. You thought by your claims of whom and their status of the author of the article would somehow impress me, not happening. And for what ever reason you felt you had to inform me who wrote that article in response to my stating she did not catch a flight home still bewilders me.

You want to talk badly about us Americans in the same breath there is a steady flow of people from there and other nations trying to make America their home and sending their children to school here in America to be educated by us American Imperialist minds. So all I can do now is smile at you and wish you a good day in hopes that you will not continue to be a boil on the butt of humanity and refocus on the real reason you’re here on this blog, that is Natalee.

    219. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:03 pm

Arubans light big fires in their gardens, with tonight’s strong wind I am expecting the fire department to be very busy. But we will all be smoked out for sure…

But you are right Kerri, it is a little strange. So good of you to try and imagine how it is here right now.

    220. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:03 pm

checkme, what is the meaning behind the feast and what goes on? Are you going to it?

Lucy, Didnt they say looked it like blood before or was that just a rumor?

    221. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:05 pm

But about what why I have still stronger suspicions that NH is around:

    222. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:06 pm

      Checkme

Maybe the Aruba version is unique, but for instance, half of Puerto Rico will be swimming at midnight; here in Santo Domingo there will be a very low attendance because of heavy rains, but usually those that want to get “despojos” of bad spirits and curses, also go to the beach at night, diving backwards. Another thing, all women cut their hair today. Supposedly it grows faster and becomes less kinky. We have not yet figured out it is about genetics.

    223. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:12 pm

Sounds dangerous! Do peoples houses and such catch on fire if there are high winds?

    224. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:14 pm

checkme why do you think that she is still alive?

    225. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:14 pm

      Options for Checkme:

†¢You have information that contradict all current expectations.
†¢That would be the best for her, to be founf safe and sounf.
†¢The alternative of death is too painful, for a lot of people, including yourself. Too many people will be permanently damaged, if she was victim of a crime or accidental death.

As far as attacks for one’s views and opinions regarding this case on the part of those with a diferent perspective, it is a pain in the but, because one wants to come out and express that this are just discussions of possibilities and believes. Which is why I do not understand the assumed posture of “you see, he is in jail now, so they are guilty of harming her”. Unfortunately this means she is gone …

    226. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:14 pm

The Texas research team has been at it all day now and still nothing. It’ll be a while I guess before they get a grip of the island and where to search

    227. Kim on June 24th, 2005 8:15 pm

I still say regardless of what has been in light of this is, how did he get home that early part of the morning? Does anyone know anyting on that and is following this as closely as I am. Maybe I missed it. She may have gone to that island that was mentinoned previous, BUT if there is a reward out, wouldn’t someone want that money if they have her?? Something is very odd about this all

    228. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:17 pm

Do you think that IF they killed and IF they dumped her into the ocean the chances of finding a body are slim to none?

    229. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:18 pm

Kerri, that danger lurkes yes… Especially this year since we have had a lot of steady rain in the last year and things have grown, and now are dried up…

Lucy, wow!! never knew that… So you are getting your hair cut tonite? Should have been here to take the backwards dive in our beautiful ocean…

But I digress. It seems that Paul is “not cooperating” anymore. I am happy to see the MM react to this as a possibility that he has told all already. As I have believed all along, the vdS have not harmed NH.

    230. scaredshitless on June 24th, 2005 8:18 pm

any news of the case? i just got back from a mtg & have no idea what’s going on

    231. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:20 pm

Kerri, depends where … I’ve mentioned this before on another page. Near the Marriott, the currents are so strong a body would get swept far out but in other areas, the body would actually wash ashore.

    232. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:21 pm

Checkme, so you don’t think they have anything to do with this or that they didn’t actually hurt Nat but know where she is? They have to be involved somehow.

    233. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:21 pm

I keep hopefull that Natalee is alive and will be found soon.

    234. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:23 pm

yliana, Do most Arubans know this about the currents?

    235. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:23 pm

Kerri, I think checkme went in the shower …

    236. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:24 pm

Oh I hope she is alive and well too, I’m just trying to understand all of this and I dont think I will untill this is all over.

    237. Rob on June 24th, 2005 8:25 pm

      Checkme

Are the currents on the island common knowledge to most that live there? If one was to get rid of a body, would they know to dump it near the Marriott vs. elsewhere?

    238. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:25 pm

      Yliana,
I hate to be negative but I honestly feel that the Texas group, as professional as they may be, will find absolutely nothing. If she is dead, she will be in the water and will have been completely devoured by sharks. No trace. Yes, Lucy, this will be very painfull for the world, but, we will get to carry on our shoulders by God what we are able to care. Not one ounce more. Others in this world carry much bigger loads than we ever get to carry.

However, due to all the things we have talked about, and the tolerance of our expression, I can state that i strongly feel that NH is not dead, she is not on Aruba, the people now in jail may know more about this, but very likely just don’t, there is no evidence against them which proves they have harmed NH beyond reasonable doubt, and that the authorities know all this but are either figuring out clues, negotiating, setting up intervention or all the above.

    239. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:26 pm

lucy, why does checkme think that the vds didn’t harm n. What are his reasons or is it just a feeling?

    240. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:28 pm

Local police keep saying that new arrests cannot be discounted. I believe the police have all these people in custody, perhaps not because they are all fully involved with the disappearance of Natalee but because the links are missing and they need to keep them in to find that link. So far, we don’t really know why the DJ is being detained and what relation he has – at least I haven’t heard of anything concrete.

    241. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:29 pm

Checkme, sharks don’t eat corpses! They eat “live” meat

    242. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:30 pm

The Texan search party is all about Southern Pride and Power. That is the impression I got, when I saw Jug Twitty talking about how HE had arranged for HIS brother named Reynold to coordinate with this team the search of Natalee.

    243. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:30 pm

I have a feeling she is being held in a house – that’s why nobody has found her yet because police cannot enter residences to check

    244. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:30 pm

Common knowledge, but it would take more than one person to do it. Joran could have never been dropped at the Marriot and then walk with a 110lbs body to the area where he could dump her. Way too many risks and physically impossible.

    245. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:31 pm

Jeez if thats the truth N has to be scared out of her mind…or drugged…

    246. Rob on June 24th, 2005 8:32 pm

      What about with his Dad?

After something “bad” happened to her at the Van Der Sloots residence?

    247. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:33 pm

It’s quite impossible that with the extensive search that has been taking place, no ‘body’ has been found if indeed she is dead. Aruba is not big. It’s flat and with not that many trees so… I just don’t know.

    248. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:33 pm

Yliana, you are right many times, but not about the sharks. For the record, they are the cleanuppers of the sick and the dead. I don’t want to talk about this morbidity but she would be gone in about 3 minutes!

    249. subdude on June 24th, 2005 8:33 pm

      edie:

A little late, but if you haven’t received an answer to “what is an accomplice”, in US, it is basically one who helps another “accomplish” a crime. There are accomplices “before the fact” and “after the fact”. Before might mean helped kidnap NH. After might mean helped dispose of the body.

    250. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:33 pm
    251. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:35 pm

If something bad happened at the vdS’ home, don’t you think that the mother would also have been arrested. She lives there too.

    252. Rob on June 24th, 2005 8:36 pm

Mother was in Holland at the time.

    253. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:37 pm

She was in Holland during that time.

    254. subdude on June 24th, 2005 8:37 pm

      rachael:

Don’t know Dutch law, but in US you don’t need a body to prove murder, technically. For instance, a confession that “I murdered X” and no sign of X would support a murder conviction.

As a practical matter, its just about impossible to get a murder conviction without the body. Defendants usually don’t confess, and, like Aruba, they have the right to remain silent. No body, no confession = no conviction.

Dutch law is probably the same scenario.

    255. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:39 pm

      Rob/Checkme, OUCH missed that one!

    256. Rob on June 24th, 2005 8:40 pm

I have a feeling that if the mother was not in Holland, none of this would have happened.

    257. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:40 pm

this whole thing is so bizarre. Its been almost a month and it seems as if too much time has elapsed for her to be ok, But Elizabeth smart was gone for months and she was found.

    258. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:40 pm

I don’t know of any case tried and convicted in Aruba of murder without a body.

    259. Checkme on June 24th, 2005 8:40 pm

You have to understand… These vdS are the most “Correct” people. They will go out of their way to assist (with good things of course!) They have put themselves in positions so that they can be of maximum service to the Aruban society. It is very sour they are in this right now. However, this can also be looked at as the supreme test for Paul, for what he has tried to instill and build up in Aruba; Justice.

    260. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:41 pm

    263. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 8:46 pm

Kerri, the only scenario that would give us hope with so much time having passed is that she is alive and well, but unable to contact her family. Maybe she is not drugged, just tied up. Or maybe, now don’t attack me on this, but maybe it’s on her own volition. She wanted to get away from her family, be independent and just didn’t realize this whole case would become the circus it has. But then again, you have the 5 detainees which brings us back to … well, reality!

    264. Kerri on June 24th, 2005 8:47 pm

More of natalees friend were on fox a second ago. They seem less catatonic than the last two.

    265. Rob on June 24th, 2005 8:48 pm

    269. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 8:51 pm

Now I know it’s quite un-pc to think ill of NH’s family but hear me out on this and give me your thoughts. Within the 1st week of NH’s disappearance, the mother went on the radio and said (not verbatum but close): “Natalee, Natalee, this is your mother, I am here in Aruba and I am not leaving without you. Natalee I am not leaving without you. We love you. We are here and we are not leaving until we have found you.”

When I heard that I thought, well, they must have had a falling out and she doesn’t want to go home. So, there are people in jail – besides that fact, don’t you all think her statement was kinda odd?

Thanks for backing me up. Ally and Lucy, how’s the evening going? “Premeditated murder” and “kidnapping leading to murder” gives me a bad feeling that someone has cracked and turned on one or more of other suspects. Why today have the charges gone from suspicion of being involved in the disappearance to something so much more specific, “suspicion of premeditated murder?”

Lucy and Dana: Can you appreciate my confusion?:) I believe you are both sincere. Safer bet is not to use either until you get to know the lady? When in doubt . . .

Anyhoo . . . despite all the bashing of Aruban police/prosecutors, I think they are doing a terrific job on the interrogation. Question for Arubans in the know — does forensic evidence, blood, DNA, often play a role in Aruban criminal matters. I am thinking perhaps not which is why the emphasis has been on interrogation. If Aruban authorities don’t use techniques frequently, or they are not routinely available, this might explain the focus elsewhere.

I personally find the tight-lipped investigation refreshing. All too often in US high profile cases are tried in the media first. Then you have to find a jury that either pretends not to have great exposure to news or truly doesn’t know about it. Either way, its not good for Defendant’s right to fair trial.

Dutch law has got us beat on this one, in MHO. I say this while I am frustrated by lack of information.

    359. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 10:12 pm

Ally, why the hostility? You stated something that was not correct. I just informed you why the judge from Curacao is coming to Aruba and what he will be doing. It was nothing personal. Sheesh!

    360. Lucy on June 24th, 2005 10:18 pm

      Subdude

Definetly safer, since there is no chance of admision of like.

I am not Aruban, but I gather that forensic evidence does play an important role. From what has been discussed today, Paul van der Sloot’s arrest is the result of of conclusions drawn from evidence found i his cars, house. Can’t confirm, but it has been stated.

I have the feeling that since Aruba has an European judicial system, they propably do not have a Jury system. Yliana could confirm.

    361. AllyinMiami on June 24th, 2005 10:19 pm

    362. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 10:19 pm

subdude, forensic evidence is used in criminal cases – granted there are not that many, which is why evidence is usually shipped to the Netherlands for forensic testing since we don’t have a forensics lab in Aruba.

    363. Yliana on June 24th, 2005 10:21 pm

When I say forensic testing – i refer to the more complicated ones. Simple tests are done here.

Also, indeed no jury system here. The trial is presided by one judge. Appeals court in in Curacao and higher appeal in the Supreme Court in the Netherlands.

      Yliana:

Thanks. Why do you think authorities questioned boys and let them go early in investigation? My thought is they didn’t suspect any lies until the HI surveillance tape did not show them dropping off NH. I also think it gave them a chance to surveil the boys to see what they did when released. But the risk of destroying evidence when released seems like a big one to take. Shouldn’t they have held them while they reviewed the HI tape, gathered cell phone records, etc . . . or am I being an armchair quarterback?

There are a few things I would like to address. 1)The reason people have things to say are because the “crime” took place in Aruba. It has to be tried and punished in Aruba. 2) Most of us are not blaming the country of Aruba for what happened, simply the government for the slowness of action in finding Natalee, the 10 days these boys had before they were charged and what seems to be a lack of clarity about anything they know, learn or can articulate. 3)The government is dragging its feet there for some reason. 4) Do not go on about how safe Aruba is. Everyplace has its safety risks. I agree it is not a “violent crime-ridden” territory, but there are more drugs there than anyone lets on. There are other “dubious” acttivities and there needs to be serious pressure put somewhere to get answers.
Not just about one anglo-saxon southern American girl from a well-to-do family, but about kids of priviledge being allowed to committ crimes and go on about their lives like it is ok, 5) You may think Natalee could leave without her passport, but she can not travel about freely without her passport. Period. The U.S. has tightened its restrictions about things like that since 9/11 and the only way she would be able to just get back into the states would be through the American Embassy. Don’t you think the Embassy would have contacted someone by now?
6)People don’t concoct a story then change it and change it again, if they are not trying to hide something. Natalee is on the island somewhere they are missing her.
She did not escape their sinister deprivation. They are hard, cold and calculating.
      There will be more arrests.
      7) Americans should spend their money here in the US for now, instead of Aruba.
Interpole should take a look see to see if they need to pay closer attention to Aruba.
We need to have the DEA look into “strange” traffic. International gov’t agencies should pay closer attention.
8)Jug Tweety said tonite, to Colmes that the fact that Karls and Charlies was a nice place was an exaggeration. He said that upon his arrival, he and Beth visited it the next evening and people sat out front and smoked dope and there was no real
authority or control in the place.
9)It is not about insulting Arubans or Americans, it is about people believing they are above the law of man and of god and civility, believing they can do as they please without consequences and without taking responsibility. It is about people in power believing they are totally above the law. It is about the inhumanity one girl has suffered, for what? Taking a vacation?

“Pre-meditated murder” Is this guy a psyco? Is he on medication for depression or anything else? Has the father had a past history or tendancies to hurt people? those things I would want to know about. This is so unreal!

Has anybody thought of trying a lie detector test? that will tell them alot? Why does it seem so hard for these officials to attempt that?

To Yliana, Re: the “RUNAWAY” Theory — To me NH’s Mom’s words on TV, “Natalee, this is your mother, I’m here and not leaving without you,” were reassurance to her daughter in case she was kidnapped and is being held captive and can hear the radio or TV. It is one of the things most mother’s of lost or stolen children say to the camera. So, I don’t interpret her statement as supporting the “run away” theory. It supports the “kidnap” theory. I pray she beats the odds and is found and safely returned to her family.

Travel agents …. They’ll say anything for a buck.

Rivie, it probably just seem that way to you. If you pronounced their names like you spell, I’d have a “take a hike” attitude too.

      anybody home?

    384. Ringo on June 25th, 2005 3:01 am

sockettoomey, not true… I’ve seen that same attitude in a few other comments. I live up in the Huntsville area but I do have friends in MT. Brook .. strickly “ad homine” attacks. Some of the best people I’ve ever met live in Mnt. Brook.

Critics, people without arms or legs trying to teach others how to swim……..

Arubagirl … tell that to the 400,000 mexicans that “migrate” to the us every year……
      Not that it’s likely in NH’s case……

Say, FYI, you fellows who keet writing about “mamasita”, it’s “mamacita”. “Ita” or “cita” on the end of a word literally means “little”. So “mamacita” means “little mama”.

    389. Spanishteacher on June 25th, 2005 9:49 am

Sorry about the “typo”, of course, it’s “keep writing”.

My 18-year old went on this trip, and I have wondered from the get-go how it was possible for a 17-year old to so completely and thoroughly dispose of a body if an accident or murder happened in the early morning hours. Has anybody thought about the fact that sun-up happens in Aruba so early? At most, there would have been only an hour or two of darkness to get this done. So, in a way, I’m not surprised that a father was proabably called on to help. I hope and pray that murder was not the answer for these brutes. I hope they plotted a way to get her off the island and she’s still alive somewhere, although, after all this publicity, it’s doubtful. This is the worst thing in the world; it’s killing the spirit of our kids and their families. We need resolution!

Has anyone noticed that both Joran and the Croes boy are shown in pictures with their hands giving ‘gang signs’? Check it out.

Ringo, I meant that I don’t think NH will just stroll through U.S. immigration under her own name. Somebody please tell me that she would be spotted.

Wow, simian gave a lyrical description of Saint John’s Day here. People just burn stuff, and yes, it can be a bit dangerous.

Well I have been reading these posts and watching some just dig into Aruba about how they are handling this case and it is about a cover up.

I think maybe we as Americans might not need to point our fingers so fast or even be so high and mighty.

Yes of course we always want is right to be done and perfectly as possible.

But as for us coming down on Aruba so fast lets take a look back at ourselves.

Let me see who was that who stabbed his exwife to death and her friend. I belive that someone had her blood in his car and the jury aquitted him because of who he was with all his money and prestige.

And it just keeps coming seems to me someone shot his wife in the head and killed her. I think he was just as shocked as we were when the jury came back and aquitted him!! Again somebody with money and power walked away from murder AGAIN.

Of course I latest now hmmm who was that oh yes the boy said he molested me. I belvie this was not the first time this man has been accused of child molesting. He even got on tv let a filmaker make a story of him he admitted in this documentry that he did share his bed with young boys. Do u think they nailed him oh that would be a big noooooooooo .

Best of all we invaded Iraq looking for weapons of mass destruction did we find any nope and nope again.

So maybe Aruba learned it from us on how to let your rich walk away after commiting a crime. So some of us just need to come down from our high horse if we are going to talk the talk we better start walking it.
